Hi,
I am leaving Korea soon and have found a buyer for my car, so I wonder if anyone could give me some direction as to what steps to take from now. Who do I call? Where do I go? What do I need to bring with me?

It all seems a bit complicated from what I've seen on the Seoul Global Help Center website, so anyone who has first hand experience with this to pass on would be a great help.

If selling it proves difficult, it might be off to the scrap heap it goes.

Thanks!
J

Go to the vehicle resistration center in your area. If the buyer is a foriegner, you both go together with a Korean to translate. The buyer pays a tax on the vehicle based what he paid you. They change the plates and registration there. The buyer needs to have proof of insurance and maybe get a residence certificate from immigration to prove he lives there legally. The vehicle registration center should be where the buyer lives and has juristiction.

Also, make sure that any unpaid traffic tickets are paid or else you will not be able to transfer the title. I had a friend who got stuck for several hundred thousand KRW when the person selling the car to them forgot to mention they had a large number of speeding and parking tickets.

It is very easy. Just go to the vehicle registration section at your Gu-Office and just transfer the car to the other person's name. They will tell you if you have any unpaid tickets, if you do, pay them at that point. Very easy.
