|
|
I just received a call from SMOE telling me they now "unexpectedly" have positions available in October and because I was part of the group that got cut the day before leaving back in August they want to offer it to me again.
Do i trust this?
furthermore, i've already accepted another job and they have my documents adn now i'm waiting for my visa number to get a new one. apparently though, SMOE never canceled my visa like i was told. i'm now just worried about getting double screwed and wondering what i should do...
thanks so much for any advice or thoughts you might have. |

Take some time and do the research. Why is this available and so on. |

You would be a fool to accept. They burned you, then tell you that you have another job waiting...you quit your new offer....then 'sorry, you took too long and someone took it! Next time don't wait so long!'
Back to square 1
Put simply, friends don't let friends work for SMOE

Usually, you would be replacing someone who pulled a midnight run. Take your second choice job and screw em. What they did to you guys in the summer was appalling. They shouldn`t get any second chances. |

You are going into a position if you take the job that already has some baggage. They are either very upset or behind in everything that they need to do. Both of these issues will bring a lot of stress and confusion to you. Take the second job. |

I'm surprised. I thought it'd take at least 3 months till people started washing out. |

thanks everybody. i pretty much decided on that plan but i suppose i needed to hear it from others who could relate as well.
i have been told many times (now that they need people) they feel "very badly" about what happened to me.
badly enough to pay for my ticket/wasted months of my life?
ah yes. that's right. no. |

The type of person that taught English during good economic times will be different than this new crop. I have met a few of the newbies and they are just like backpackers out of university. They will take off for Thailand as soon as they get a few pays under their belts. By the end of October schools will be screaming for new teachers. Other schools will notice they have a bunch of drunk kids on theri hands. |

OP, anyone in your situation would understandably have a large dose of "screw 'em, cos they screwed me" in the back of their mind influencing any decision.
Still, I'd say weigh up what both jobs would offer you. What salary would you be getting in each of the two jobs, how about holidays etc too? If the SMOE one was going to leave you significantly better off, if I were in that position I'd at least consider it.
Remember also that while SMOE admin screwed people over, the school you could potentially be going to probably wasn't responsible for that. |

If someone did indeed do a midnight run from this particular school, then there is probably a reason. Do you want to work for a school that might make you want to run too? |

Tell SMOE you accept the position.
Then, right before you're supposed to start working, tell them you can't work there because you "unexpectedly" have an oversupply of job offers.
An eye for an eye. |

Is this one of the supposed 'layoff' jobs that bassexpander talks about in his podcast?
SMOE screwed themselves in the foot pulling this stunt.
It's up to you if you want to deal with a potential headache or not. |

True. But, it's also possible that nobody suddenly left at all. It could be that someone somewhere got their numbers wrong (and we all know now how much SMOE gets its numbers wrong) and this school should have been allocated a teacher but weren't.
There are also a small number of people working for SMOE who began late (i.e in mid September or October) and who consequently had out of synch contract dates. It could be one of those people finishing now.
If someone has left suddenly, it could be for a variety of reasons - health problems, homesickness, sudden emergency back home - that don't necessarily reflect badly on that particular school.
Of course the midnight runner because it was so goddamn awful is another possibility to be borne in mind in this situation. However, even if that has happened it's equally possible that it was down to the individual not being cut out for that job, as the job itself being bad.
In the end, whatever your instinct feels most comfortable with is the best decision. But there's a lot to weigh up, so weigh up all those things that would matter to you. |

Doesn't work. Well before he's supposed to start working, he'd have to send all his documentation to the school, and then they'll apply for a visa number...and then he'd have to wait for an additional three months to get another job. |
