Hi all,

I'm having a lot of trouble trying to decide on what EPIK province I should preference. Here's a bit about me:

-Don't want to be placed in the middle of nowhere. Don't want to be in Seoul.
-Would like to have a decent size expat community to socialize with.
-I love nature, hiking, and wandering around
-Not big on drinking
-Would prefer to not be somewhere freezing cold all the time

What region would put me at the highest chance of being placed in a good town/city?

Any suggestions?

Thanks Smile

Jeolla namdo, Gwangju would be good. Anywhere in Korea is going to be cold.

Didn't know you could choose provinces anymore.

Ulsan meets pretty much all the criteria - one of the least cold cities in the winter, excellent foreigner community, plenty of hiking to be done. It's not the most "happening" city but I lived there for 18 months and loved it.

Busan is even better for everything above, but with apparently no experience you've got no chance. The missus and I would love to go there but they're asking ridiculous levels of education/experience for less money than other places.

Korea is small, and has excellent public transportation. You can get out to 'nature' from the most dense urban locale within an hour. You can get to the middle of nowhere within 3.

Unless you're from South Africa, the southern United States, or maybe Australia, you're not going to find it freezing cold much of the year, and certainly not during the summer, regardless of placement location.

If you want to live in a specific city, list an Metropolitan city Office of Education (MOE) as your preferred location. Like Daejeon, Daegu, or Busan. If you specify a province, you have no say in the location within that province.

That said, as isitts mentioned, even specifying your preferred location on the application may have no bearing on your placement. IMO, if you want any chance of living in the location you specify, you need to be one of the first people EPIK recommends to the Offices of Education. If you're late or even middle of the pack getting your docs in/approved/forwarded, disavow yourself of any thought you're going to live where you'd like to.

Take away: Apply to one of the MOEs like Daejeon or Daegu (or maybe Ulsan), and get your perfectly-meeting-criteria-and-requiring-no-changes/delay documents submitted yesterday.
