Korean workers had an average of 10 paid vacation days per year, which is the lowest throughout the world.

The global average was 21.6 days of paid vacation.

I bet they take the least amount of sick days as well.....excluding the other Korea.

Koreans love to work so much that work is like a holiday and holidays are like work.

And lots of salarypeople don't take all their vacation days. They follow the boss's lead regarding whether they can "afford" to take them all.

Of course, they are financially remunerated for any days they don't take.

I wonder if some of the men don't want to go home.

Sometimes I feel that the locals don't know how to relax.

I'm sure that's true for some.

The government was really pushing camping as a means of family recreation, but from what I hear, other than setting up a tent in a local park, it's not really gaining that much traction. There's the expense, which can be considerable, and then there's all the effort that goes into it, putting it up, taking it down, cleaning it and then where are you going to store it in the average Korean apartment.

On a positive note, the news showed lots of people having fun ice fishing.

I always feel the lie that it was spit and elbow grease that built the miracle on the han river is partly responsible for the acceptance to be worked so hard.

Camping seemed popular during the summer. It was more of a campground than camping, but still outside I guess.

Not holidays--vacation days.

Sad but true. A bunch of people in my office still have days left over and are taking the odd day off here and there. The way I was reminded about my own remaining vacation days, and the whole use it or lose it policy, I can't help but assume everyone else is frantically trying to burn through their own now before the end of the year.

I remember once chatting with a colleague about his upcoming vacation. At the time, he had a particularly trying job, and he seemed relieved to be getting away from work for a bit. I suggested popping open a beer and sipping it on the beach to blow off some steam, and he was like "Oh no, I won't have time to do that, I have to deal with my family, and it's not really my style." I was like damn, can't even get an hour to himself to unwind...

In many cases, the men absolutely don't want to go home. Also, quite often, their wives don't want them to return home early and take more time off because it means that their precious coffee/shopping/gossip time would be interrupted by having to spend time with the man that they married.

Maybe if they actually worked at the office instead of surfing the Web or chitchatting with coworkers...

The concept of work hours is mostly quantity, not quality. Working endless hours of mediocre work is more highly regarded than a skilled person that can get the same amount of work done in a shorter amount of time. Thus, they create an environment where people work long hours, take very few days off, and generally get little done in the hours they do work.
