Nelle Harper Lee, who won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1961 for her book, "To Kill a Mockingbird," has died at the age of 89, multiple sources in her hometown of Monroeville, including the mayor's office, confirmed Friday morning.

Her only book to that date was read to our Grade 6 class by our teacher, early 80s or so. I guess it was okay, though I'm not sure how much of the overall cultural context I would have understood(black men, Deep South, rape).
I didn't see the film until I was in my thirties, and obviously had a better handle on things. Can't say I was blown away as some others seemed to haven been, though it was a passable way to spend an evening.
It was amusing to read, a year or so ago, stories of people who named their kids Atticus after the heroic libearal lawyer in TKAM, and then were shocked to discover that he was a racist, according to the more authoritative second book.
And isn't there some rumour that Mockingbird was more or less written by Truman Capote? |
