K, so I am planning to go to Thailand for my summer vacation. I've never been, and 5 weeks of Not-Korea is just what the doctor ordered.

I know its rainy season, but how bad does it REALLY get? Is it worth going? I've had friends tell me its GD hot out, and then you get bout an hour of rain every day or so. That I can handle, I would just hit the bars...

So, veteran travellers...whats the word? July 20-Sept...too rainy?

I lived in Thailand for a few years and when it was the rainy season it could absolutely pour. I'm talking about the skies just opening up kind of pouring.

But it wasn't a sure thing, you could go weeks for a time with no rain during the rainy season.

It varies a bit depending on where in Thailand. I have a home on Phuket - and I like the rainy season. Often it is just typical tropical monsoon season weather. Hot and muggy, but a nice 15 minute to 2 hour electrical thunderstorm (really pours) in the afternoon that cools things off and washes the world nicely.

Often the rain comes in the middle of the night for several hours - and not in the daytime at all. So you wake up to a fresh-smelling clean moist world.

Nothing to ruin a vacation about. It usually rains about nap time anyway.

From time to time you get a two or three day superstorm - those are kind of cool too. Go out anyway. Thais do.

I lived in Thailand for about 3 years and went through 3 rainy seasons.

Central/Northern Thailand, July and August aren't that bad, September is not great, October and early November are seriously wet.

June: almost daily rain, 30 minutes/day
July: almost daily rain, 30 minutes/day, plus occasional rainy day
Aug: daily rain, 30 minutes/day, plus possible 2 rainy days in a row
Sept. daily rain, 60 minutes/day, plus occasional 1- or 2-day storm
Oct.: daily rain, 60 minutes/day, plus frequent 2-day storm
1st 1/2 Nov. frequent 2-day storm, but no daily rain
2d 1/2 Nov. clear as a bell

Troughout all of this period, there will be more or less cloud cover.

I was there last Aug/Sept and I had no problems. Most days were sunny and it rained for about an hour a day, usually around 6pm. OK, there were a couple of 2 day storms, but in a 5 week period thats not too bad.

how much does it rain in the rainy season? when i first moved to thailand i was interested to see what all the talk about the rainy season was. one buddy spent his vacations during the rainy season as he felt it was no big deal.

i guess it can rain a lot but in 4 rainy seasons here i would say it is a nonfactor when making decisions concerning a vacation. personally for me, here the rainy seasons have been a joke. asked 100's of univ students when was the last time they saw bkk flood. all they could say is, bkk floods??? i am sure there are times when there are endless torrential rains but from my experience i dont even carry an umbrella! a buddy who has a house in isaan proclaimed in sept that the rainy season was over (sept and oct are the two biggest months).

vacations - the nice thing about coming during the rainy season is that most tourists arent here til dec.
