I heard there would be a speech today by 2MB (the local pet nickname for Lee Myung Bak).

Wow. No *beep*-footing around by President Lee. Cutting off trade itself is a huge move, but cutting off access to South Korea's sea lanes (allowed according to the Inter-Korean Agreement on Maritime Transportation) is also a very big deal, especially if Japan follows suit (which it might). I'd have to look into that a bit more, but I believe that basically confines North Korea's boats on the east coast to half of a pond, as the Korea Strait pinches off the southern exit of the East Sea/Sea of Japan.
If Russia does not follow suit, it becomes a very expensive and time-consuming journey north and then around Hokkaido and then south around the rest of Japan and southern South Korea to get to the west coast.
Good on you, President Lee. Those dozens of sailors did not die in vain.

Closing those sea lanes will make things VERY interesting for the next few months.
Let's see how hot Dear Leader gets under the collar as his illegal weapons/drugs operation gets shut down.
whoops, forgot the link. http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/kushibo/~3/e1Whqd0NwUo/seoul-comes-down-as-hard-as-it-can-with.html |

I hope they can hold off the war until summer vacation when everyone ought to hightail it out of there.
Good luck, all. |

The meat of it:

From this moment, no North Korean ship will be allowed to make passage through any of the shipping lanes in the waters under our control, which has been allowed by the Inter-Korean Agreement on Maritime Transportation. The sea routes meant for inter-Korean exchanges and cooperation must never again be used for armed provocations.
Trade and exchanges between the Republic of Korea and North Korea will also be suspended. We still remember the killing of an innocent South Korean tourist by a North Korean armed guard at the Mt. Kumgang resort. More recently, North Korea unilaterally confiscated South Korean assets at this same resort. Worse yet, the North sank the Cheonan taking the precious lives of our young sailors. Under these circumstances, any inter-Korean trade or other cooperative activity is meaningless.
However, we will continue to provide assistance for infants and children. Matters pertaining to the Kaesong Industrial Complex will be duly considered, taking its unique characteristics into consideration. |
The actions seem reasonable and balanced with room for opening or closing as earned by the DPRK. |

Yeah, but are top North Korean officials earnest enough to see the sanctions as reasonable and balanced? |

The odds are greater that Seoul would attack the North first, not the other way around. It just makes operational sense |

Except that Seoul would be razed in the counter-attack. |

And risk losing all of Pyeongyang, especially that gaudy ass arrow hotel? Not likely. It'll just be one slap each, not Korean armageddon. |

The Great Leader will make damned sure that Seoul is 'raining from the sky' before he jets to China for santuary.

The whole point of attacking The North first is to move the front lines as far away from Seoul as possible.
Remember the South Korean objective in a war with the North is to move the lines as far away from Seoul as possible so as to minimize the damage as much as possible before the inevitable victory over the North is achieved. How best to accomplish that? Take the offensive into the North and move the front lines as far away from Seoul as possible.
Unlike South Korea, I believe that the North's counterattack capability would be limited if South Korea were to achieve a substantial push into North Korea. THe bulk of the North's forces are positioned around the DMZ which would mean in the event of a breakthrough those units would be the ones thrown into disorder. Plus I think the SKs would be smart enough not to overextend and would be able to call on the Americans to counter any NK counterattack. |

N. Korea says will sever all inter-Korean relations
"The Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea formally declares that from now on it will put into force the resolute measures to totally freeze the inter-Korean relations, totally abrogate the agreement on non-aggression between the north and the south and completely halt the inter-Korean cooperation," said the statement carried by the North's Korean Central News Agency.
"All the issues arising in the inter-Korean relations will be handled under a wartime law," the statement said, strongly denouncing President Lee over his earlier statement holding the North responsible for a torpedo attack on the South's patrol ship Cheonan near the western sea border on March 26. |
