I haven't posted a question in ages, so I thought now would be a good time.

I'd like to know the grammatically correct ways to write a sentence using "of which" instead of "whose".

Are the following all grammatically correct? (and have the same meaning)
(a) I want the house whose backyard is big. =
(b) I want the house, the backyard of which is big. =
(c) I want the house of which the backyard is big. =

I realize that (b) and (c) may sound stilted, but I just want to know if they are grammatically correct or not. I cannot find this structure in any of my grammar books. However, I found the following:

(d) He pointed to a grove of trees, the trunks of which were coated with ice.
(online - The American Heritage Guide to Contemporary Usage and Style)
That sentence seems to support (b).

And I found the following sentences on the Azar Grammar Forum (but I can't find anything in the book I have by Betty Azar)

(e) Martin has an antique car whose seats are made of red leather. =
(f) Martin has an antique car of which the seats are made of red leather. =
(g) Martin has an antique car, the seats of which are made of red leather.

If those are indeed correct, then (g) would support (b) and (f) would support (c). I guess.

Thanks if you can confirm that sentences (b) and (c) are indeed grammatically correct.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

They're all in common usage.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I'm still glad I did the leg work and found some similar examples. I don't understand why I can't find them in my grammar references though.

Thanks again.

Not arguing much with anyone on this thread.

BUT, no one, at least where I'm from(ie. NA), would speak that way.

Most everyone I know would say, "I want the house with the big backyard."
