Hi everyone-

If you're not familiar with avatars, see that picture of a lemon to the left of this text? That's an avatar. It's a small (max 80x80pixels & smaller than 6k) icon that serves two purposes: it gives your identity a little more personality, and it helps other posters recognize your messages quickly.

"I want one too! How do I get one?"

First, you need a square-ish image of something, and resize it down to a little box. Microsoft Photo Editor (comes with MS office) does this pretty well. MS Paint, on most Windows installations, can also create a small image. I used a combination of the two to make this lemon.

"How do I upload it to the internet?"

We don't have the ability to upload that picture to the eslcafe.com server. However, the picture can be pulled in from another web server somewhere on the internet. If you have your own webspace somewhere, upload your picture there.

Some free sites either don't allow you to remotely link to a picture on their server, and threaten you with banning if you set up an account for the sole purpose of remotely serving up files for a page somewhere else. Check the user policies to see if it's allowed.

I've also been offering web space on my own servers (off of this site - in my office actually) as a community service. Send me a private message and I'll be glad to help out.

"It's on a server now. How do I attach it onto my messages?"

In "Profile", at the bottom of the list of options is the "Avatar Control Panel" - which is basically just a box where you can put in the address of your image. Just paste it down there and it should work.

Cool, eh? It's a great feature - try it out! Again - send me a message by pressing "pm" below if you'd like some help.

Agggh. Don't use those losers at angelfire, tripod, or geocities to host your image. If you do, I think you have to change the extension .jpg to .txt to get around it. There are many other webhost sites that are better, such as villagephotos.com But they have a maximum bandwidth limit so...

But for avatars, it would really be best if the images could be uploaded. Otherwise, why bother?

Blueberries! Wild, grown-in-the-ditch, Eastern Canadian blueberries. Just doesn't get any better. You KNOW you want some.

I have an avatar (Yay!) but it's too big. Or does that not bother anyone except me?

I have to say that the best avatar I ever saw was of Captain Avatar from Starblazers.

Hi everyone!

1. I'm really enjoying the creative avatars.

2. Please make sure you don't go over the 80x80 dimensions. It's particularly important that the avatar not be too wide. It messes up the formatting of the screen. Thanks to those I've contacted already for your kind cooperation. If you need resizing assistance I'm glad to help.

3. If you're having problems figuring out where to "host" your avatar, contact me. I'm pleased to offer web space on my server, which will stay online 24/7 until a. it crashes or b. I change jobs, likely this summer (the server lives in my office).

Don't hesitate at all to contact me. That's why I'm here.
Happy Lunar NY... The Lemon
