Hi teachers,

Can anyone recommend a good company/organization that offers winter camps? I have a month from Dec. 23-January 30 and I want to pick up a little extra work.

Is there anything I should watch out for? Common dishonest business practices, hidden deductions, etc? I've heard that some camps are bad for getting paid.

Any and all comments appreciated.

Thanks.

I'd be careful about working a winter/summer camp run by a private school or other small private business (e.g. a hogwan). I think that if they're run by a university you'll be less likely to be cheated by them on pay day.

When you apply for a job at a camp, make sure you take note about whether it's RUN BY a university, or simply run AT a university. Most of them are held at universities because there are dorms, classrooms and other facilities already in place. The business running the camp simply rents out the university facilities. Similarly a lot of universities run similar such camps.

I think that camps are an ok job if you have the energy to work with kids. You don't get parents complaining like you do at hogwans. You don't have much of a curriculum that you have to stick to. Usually you can just do lots of fun stuff with the kids - in English. Play sports, learn to sing songs or dance, play board games, scavenger hunts. Often they'll have materials to work with like construction paper, markers, crayons, glue, etc.

Thanks, I didn't consider whether the camps are "run by" or just "run at" Universities. Can anybody else comment on their experiences, or know a specific camp that is trustworthy?

I worked at the Sogang University camp in the summer of 2009. Very well run and organized. Complete curriculum in place. Good coteacher. Good lunch. Payed on the last day. Highly recommended.
