I am planning a 2-3 week trip in early-mid July. I have a rough itinerary at this point, involving stops in Cambodia, Vietnam, and Indonesia. I've found favorable ticket prices through Kayak/Orbitz and some individual airliner Web sites.
My concern is that the prices will go up / tickets will sell out. However, I'm not ready to fully commit to this itinerary--I have to figure out a few other things first.
Any recommendations for how far in advance I should plan to book my flights? In the past, I've booked my summer/winter trips about two months in advance, but maybe I need to book earlier in order to benefit from low prices.
I guess I'm wondering--in *your* experience, when's the ideal time to book? |

i've always found the earlier the better. so whenever you have things set in stone, book then. i have never seen flights from here to anywhere get cheaper, only more expensive. |

I agree with iselynjenniep. If you're planning a trip the earlier the better. I also find that you can use special promos and deals (like cebu, air asia) which are cheap but unfortunately inflexible.
I plan ahead always, all the details, it makes it easier when I'm on a big trip. I don't want to waste time while I'm travelling. Besides, you can always go back.

if you want a non-low cost carrier book early and try to leave on a wednesday or thursday for the lowest cost.
however, if you want to fly a low cost carrier, do the opposite. watch the sites like a hawk and whenever you see a good promo jump on it. often times the best promos are done a month or less in advance of most flight dates most people would want and almost all desirable flights are snapped up within days.
in my opinion i think it's worth it to pay the premium and take a regular carrier and not worry about it sniping tickets, paying extra for luggage, seats, etc. i took a trip recently and used air asia for the first time and hated every minute of it. even the lcct hub in kuala lumpur (their main hub) was horrible in every way compared to the main kul hub. |
