WASHINGTON
Coca-Cola and Pepsi have lowered levels of a chemical in caramel coloring to comply with a California law, but insisted the drinks pose no health risks and recipes will not change.
The move allows the companies to avoid having to label products with a cancer warning due to what the health-conscious west coast state has ruled are high levels of 4-methylimidazole, shown to cause cancer in lab rodents.
Both drinkmakers said their popular and highly secretive soda recipes will not be altered but that caramel suppliers have been asked to reduce 4-MEI levels in California, a change that will eventually spread across the United States. |

It'll still rot your teeth, though. Carbonated soft drinks.... few things have ever done so little for so many people. |

Sure, it's safe...There's so much sugar in soft drinks that drinking as little as one glass per week is enough to increase the chances of developing pancreatic cancer. |

One of the saddest things I've ever seen was a kid who drank a litre a day. By the age of 8 he had nothing left for teeth except little black stumps. |

I knew a kid like that back in grade school (used to freak me out seeing his mouth full of rotten teeth)... Hopefully they turned a new leaf once their adult teeth came in...
I've known a few people back home who would guzzle a litre or more of the stuff each day, like it's water. Whenever they're thirsty they just crack open some cola (which of course probably makes them more thirsty, so they drink even more). One guy I know has a whole garbage can that's just full of just empty cans (must go through like a case every couple days). All that high-fructose corn syrup and acid gumming up their system, it's got to be one of the most unhealthy things to do. Boggles my mind how some people can be so oblivious... |

The first year I lived in Korea, one of my co-workers was my roommate. He was from Georgia, and like any good native son of the state, drank a ton of Coke. He would drink one of those big bottles (is it 1.5 liters in Korea? I forget) every couple days. Throw in the fact he was an alcoholic that would get completely shitfaced a few times a week, and yeah, he was just a model of great health. He did a great job of fitting the stereotype of a fat ass American. We were about 5 years apart in age, but he looked like he was a good 10 years older than me. |
