Time to leave the country again this month. I'm sick of going to Japan so I thought about trying Taipei. It's only around 300,000 won so I thought I'd try it. Is it worth it? What can I do there on the weekend? Where should I go? Anyone else have to leave around January 30? |

Taipei is not your "touristy" type place.
Good for someone who is curious about Taiwan, food, life, etc. but no major attractions that I can think of except:
The tallest building in the world
The Taipei Zoo (horrendous treatment of animals to be found there) |

Wow, sounds great. I kind of wanted to check out the other place for foreign teachers. Since there'sa lot of debate about where the best place to be is. |

You might want to hop to Lonely Planet and look up the climate charts; there's not much point in going to Taiwan if you're freezing there in January. You might look at a cheapie short term stay in Singapore or the Philippines...

Okay.. got my composure gathered here.
I went to Taiwan over Chuseok. Sure, its worth going to. Its not great in itself, but something just a little bit different. I have the Lonely Planet Taiwan book if you are interested. I'd pass it on for either a couple beers or something..
I found it interesting to go to just for my own peace of mind. Kind of get a sense for English Teacher life there and what the day-to-day reality is for teachers. So on that level, sure it was interesting. I wouldn't necessarily go way out of my way to go there or anything. But just on that level alone, it made it worth the time for me. |

If you're intending to get a new E2 visa there, forget it.... Korea considers taiwan a part of china and has no embassy there...be warned, don't waste your trip... |

Coming from Taiwan via the PI? Aren't they in the other direction? |

As T.Beer says, theres not a whole lot to see in Taiwan- but it certainly makes a refreshing change..I did 2 weeks there, just nice to soak up the sun, hear the chinese, meet the down to earth people, etc... |

Anybody else find this tower ungainly and awkward looking? I'd still like to go up it.

You can get an E1 in Taipei. I have one in my passport. Korea has no Embassy but they do have a "Mission Office" which can issue visas. Mission office is the same thing as an Embassy but no diplomatic status.

the building in Taipei is under construction...has yet to surpass the Petronas Towers...so I rest my case...it won't be official until consturction is finished according to Guiness....
Petronas is still the world's tallest... |
