Depends a lot on the level. Our students needed to start with the basics, including how to indent. As long as I provided a sample paper and explained those basics, I found the book "Ready to Write" by Blanchard and Root worked well. Not sure if it is still in print for a reasonable price in Korea anymore though.
I also had them read a book and write a paper per chapter. We read "Where the Red Fern Grows" by Rawls. Lots of ppt files online for free.
I also created a page of sentences with their weekly mistakes, and we corrected them together in class. They really liked that. |

^^ What they said-- Ready to Write-- there's also Get Ready to Write (for lower levels)...it's about 25-28,000 won new. I usually send it to the uni copy center and they get it for 5-6,000 won in a spiral. For most basic and lower intermediate, one or the other does the trick. |

You do realize that this no different than your students just copy-and-pasting for their writing assignments. Have the students purchase the book. |

No, because I prepare a reader that includes reading, speaking, and writing. I don't copy the entire textbook, but rather some chapters that also include different materials from other books.
Neither I nor the copy center are making any money off of it, nor am I claiming that the materials are my own. HUGE difference....
Never had a photocopy packet back in Uni? I sure did... |

thanks for the suggestions. we already use a reading and writing book, but a student came up to me after class to see if I could suggest another one. He wants to practice more on his own. |

Tell him to get Step-by-Step Writing. It is a 4 book series. If he wants some self study it should work for him. |

I have used the Writing to Learn series. A little dull to look at, but it has some useful writing exercises and grammar information. It's a good book to use as a basis for the class and then you can add your own materials to it. |
