Travel tip: start and keep a Paypal account as an emergency back-up.

I normally use Agoda.com hotel booking service to make hotel reservations and normally pay online with my bank card. I just recently noticed Agoda will accept Paypal as a method of payment, I tried it and it worked fine.

I normally travel with a back-up bank card and a few traveler's checks etc. However, in the event I was robbed of everything or escaped a hotel fire in only my boxer shorts. All I would need is a internet connection for a few minutes and at least I can book and pay for a hotel online to stay at (one with a breakfast plan to have at least one meal paid for) while I make arrangements to get some proper funds.

This method is attractive to me as it is near instant to have a paid hotel room to stay in with only the use of a simple internet connection, no phone numbers, bank card or special arrangements needed, useful if your are in a real jam.
