Is it common for someone to go to Korea on a tourist visa and then get a E2 after they arrive? I won't graduate until mid May, my recruiter says that it be okay for me to teach on a tourist visa until I can get the certificate. Is there a high risk of getting caught by immigration? |

Don't teach until you get the E-2 - it's illegal and if you're busted then you'll be deported. There's nothing to stop you teaching if that's what you want, but you can arrive in Korea on a tourist visa, get yourself settled into the Korean way of life and then make a trip (paid for by your school, make sure of that) to Japan to get the visa. |

If your school wants you to teach it will only take them a couple weeks to arrage your E2 and visa run.
A friend of mine just came and the school was wise enough to have her just watch classes - and not teach until after her visa run. How did they get so wise? The last guy there was deported after they had him teach on a tourist visa for three months - so they all learned a lesson. It does happen.
It is not unusual to come here on a tourist visa - but be very very clear about not teaching until legal. Maybe inconvenient for them, but then getting deported would be VERY inconvenient for you.
Good luck! |
