Posted: Thu Apr 26, 2012 11:03 am Post subject: Ranking of Korean Universities for Terms and Conditions |
|
|
Back in 2006, Dave's member PRagic launched a thread which was very informative about Korean Universities and what they were offering in terms and conditions for English Instructors. You can see it here:
http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=72496&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
Back then, PRagic suggested creating a ranking system based on the attractiveness of each package. I quote him here but remember he was posting about the situation in 2006!:
As Korea is a hierarchal society, and Koreans seem to be so very concerned with rankings, I would like to accommodate them. I would like to rank all the universities in terms of employment conditions. This thread can be a running ranking meter.
Seems to be at least three distinct tiers for universities here, at least in terms of employment conditions. The following do NOT include estimated value for university provided housing, but DO include housing allowance.
I. The first tier schools ask for a max. of 12 hours, pay at least 3.0 million/month (give or take), and offer fully paid breaks (some with the option of a summer/winter session with extra pay). So far, the only schools that I know of that make this category are Ewha, Yonsei, and Konkuk. To make the 3.0 cut off, you have to have the degrees and experience to jack up your salary at at least two of these places.
II. Then there are the second tier places. These schools offer around 2.5 for 12 hours, plus fully paid vacations and optional summer/winter session. SNU is in this category.
III. Then come what I would call third tier schools, the ones that do pay 2.5, but want over 15 hours.
IV. Then there are the worst of the worst, the schools that offer 1.8-2.1 for 18+ hours. Some of these schools even require summer/winter sessions, but I can't see making a separate sub-crap category. Jeju National falls into this category.
So here we have four categories. If you can think of others, add them in. If you can rank a school, please do so. In the end, we should be able to compile a ranking of universities here.
Let's have at it again as a new hiring season approaches! Things must have changed a bit since 2006 - especially those numbers! It would be great if we could do another of these rankings since as we all know, a university's prestige and reputation is often at odds with how it treats its foreign language instructors and "professors"....SO how would you rank your university? Should the categories be redefined? How about the jobs that are beginning to crop up now on the Korean job board?
(Thanks to PRagic for the original thread:)) |

Wow! Thanks for all the links~!
Here's another site (though the font coloring is crazy) that lists tons of unis and their basic stats... no links to jobs, though, so you have to google the ones you like~

Great, but Joe Seoulman's list is out of date - 2010 was the last list and many uni jobs were not added. He's been doing a great job but what we need is commentary on the latest news, insider information etc. |

simple question is there anywhere in seoul that will hire someone with 2 years experience (only one in korea) and a bachelors degree in journalism?
A lot of people say you NEED a masters. Some say they have landed uni jobs without it. Mostly I see job posts that say you need an MA. Should i not bother?
Thanks. |

Most want an MA, but will accept a BA + experience (usually 3 years in teaching in uni)
I did see one in Daegu that said a BA was fine, but everyone said that uni was the worst, so... You can always apply. They're not going to burn your house down if you're not qualified... but they probably won't reply, lol |

I've found that conditions at many school have degraded considerably in the past few years. Most jobs in the English departments have not been replaced, or changed to unigwon jobs.
At our school, we've lost our personal offices, and now have to share. 5 months of vacation now includes required camp work (not that many of us are complaining, because, for now, they pay 30,000 to 40,000 per hour extra for this above our checks).
The area where many schools have taken a dive is in housing. Many schools are dropping housing or housing allowances if you don't live in their apartments (which are now another 6 years older since PRagic's first thread). Our school has been nudging us, attempting to get rid of the 300,000 won housing allowance as well. We've fought-off the change so far.
I know of one well-known Seoul university that keeps everyone at the same pay level, regardless of experience or years of service. This school used to be considered one of the better ones.
FWIW, a guy I know just won a judgement against his university this past week because they failed to renew his contract without proper notice. He's getting something like 6 months of back pay, plus being reinstated.
We need all of the help we can get, as Seoul is far more expensive than it was even 6 years ago. Taxes are higher, transportation is higher, vegetables are insane. I could go on. |

I can confirm Swampfox that my uni in Jeollabukdo dropped the (only very small anyway at 80k to cover utilities) accomodation payment for those who chose to live off campus to zero in our most recent contracts. The rationale given was the cost of upgrading the uni dorms for teachers to stay in mean't that they wanted people to use them. |

Yes, anyone who has been around this board and had their nose to the ground (like they should) knows that a certain prominent university's FLI programs are to be avoided......second only to Wonderland.
When I see those advertisements I do not even consider them uni positions based on what I have read here over the past few years. |

Hmm...Actually the terms and conditions at Wonju seem not too bad at all if you're up for living out there....similar to to Kodae's Jochiwon job. |
