James, did you use a recruiter (i.e. did you send your documents directly to EPIK)?

Yes I did use a recruiter dragonsfiresoul. So I sent my docs to them and they'll pass them onto EPIK.

hi,

I have taught hagwons in seoul for 3 years but because I had to take an extended break this winter due to family issues back in the states, I decided to apply for SMOE EPIK (through a recruiter) ugh, what a headache this has been and although I have been confirmed to seoul, I have been told that I will not get my location until AFTER orientation in feb. is this on par with you guys??

knowing this and the size of the city, im tempted to just grab a gangnam/seocho hagwon job for fear of being dumped out in the boonies through SMOE.

so can anyone who has taught both give their thoughts on which way to go? pay is the same. I don't really know much about public school jobs. is it much better than hagwons?

thanks

No one on EPIK (or SMOE, too, I guess) knows their exact location until after orientation. Nothing new there. If you've been confirmed to Seoul through SMOE, you won't be put out in the boonies as SMOE only covers the Seoul metropolitan area.

As for whether public schools are better than hagwons, I think they are, but that's a matter of personal preference. Some people like hagwons better. Plenty of threads on Dave's discussing that topic. Wink

It's crazy how quickly some of you seem to hear! I'm completely jealous! I think the wait for placement is worse than waiting to hear if you passed the interview.

With the interview you just had to impress one person you were looking at ( I got really lucky and mine was from a nearby part of Atlanta and wanted to talk about that for a huge chunk of the interview), while who knows what thoughts are going through a mysterious board that decides your fate!

It's been exactly a week since my recruiter notified me that I was recommended to Busan, which is sadly nothing official! Does the most recent post on EPIK's fbook page mean I should hear on Monday? Or just that it's another wave of appointments. I posted their post below.

"Attention Spring 2013 EPIK Teachers:

We are currently preparing contracts, notices of appointment and information packets for all EPIK teachers. We plan to begin to sending out these documents starting next Monday, January 7th (KST).

Thank you for your patience!"

@katyll

Good question, I'm in the exact same boat as you! (Recommended to Busan but unsure where things go from here.) Did they ask you for a second interview? My recruiter told me that BMOE sometimes requests one, but I haven't heard from them so I have no idea what comes next. Recruiter only said that maybe I wouldn't need one.

I agree, the wait for the Notice of Appointment has been worse than anything. If this is really going to happen I need to sell my car and move out of my apartment, but I'm not going to do that until I have that visa in my hand!

@Bobo Vette

Complete radio silence so far...I hope they don't ask for another interview. The very idea is daunting. I've been trying not to ask my recruiter, they are more of the "patience, things will come with time" mentality. May I ask what recruiter you are coming with?

I have a few similar things to do before I can leave, such as fly across country to drop off my dog with a friend for the next year. That's a hard trip to fit in at last minute, since I can't just drop her off and run.

I've heard that Busan is one of the slowest provinces to give placements. So, I'm guessing that anyone recommended to Busan is in the same boat.

I requested Seoul, and I've heard a lot of other people have already been placed in Seoul too, so I'm guessing Seoul is one of the faster provinces.

Per this statement and given the fact that I was notified at the beginning of December that I was accepted for a position in Seoul but haven't received a physical NOA, my best guess is that no one else has actually physically received their NOAs yet, even if they have received emails that they have been placed.

Short answer: No, the facebook post only applies to those who are waiting on their physical NOAs to be mailed. Those who are still waiting to hear on placement... unfortunately still need to wait.

However, if I am incorrect on this and someone has received their physical NOA already, please let all of us know!

katyll I also read that post on facebook. I hope that it means notifications will be sent as well, but of course have no idea. It's almost been 3 weeks and my recruiter just tells me to "be patient". Easier said than done!
