Ya-Ta boy did you study history at any level beyond high school? |
Honestly, I doubt it. It's amusing to make fun of how little he understands history/politics/economics, but sometimes it just feels too easy... |

I do find myself in the uncomfortable situation of agreeing with an openly bigoted racist slimeball: 'divide up the US'. He says do it on the basis of race. I think we need to do it on the basis of government philosophy. Choose between 'we are one country' or 'we are a collection of sovereign states'. Same old argument as they had in 1788 and 1861. Truth be told, we also had the same argument in the 1930's and FDR won that one, too. |
There is one reason, and one reason only, that Lincoln and FDR "won" the argument: military might. It had nothing whatsoever to do morality (Lincoln would've happily torched the south without freeing a single slave if that's what it would've taken to allow him to consolidate power, and FDR was like having Stalin in the White House) it had everything to do with having a bigger stick than those who were vying for freedom. |

Stalin in the White House? Because of Japanese internment camps? |

The South has been more pro-war than the North. |

So the whole gaming of the breakup of the country never ended up happening, but I saw this today, which is somewhat similar in character. |

"If Canada and the United States can be separate nations without being denounced as being in a state of impermissible anarchy, why may not the South secede from the United States? New York State from the Union? New York City from the state? Why may not Manhattan secede? Each neighborhood? Each block? Each house? Each person? But, of course, if each person may secede from government, we have virtually arrived at the purely free society, where defense is supplied along with all other services by the free market and where the invasive State has ceased to exist."

These days Libertarianism acts like a logical and fail-proof justification against liberal democracy, conservative politics of any modern form except American paleo-conservatism.
This does lead me to think that the domestic politics is really destroying the United States of America without the 19th century Civil War madness. |
