Why did it feel like just another day off? Because looking around this drab place for all intents and purposes it WAS just another day off: no Christmas lights. No family. No Christmas Story on TV. No church. No Christmas tree with presents underneath. No decorations around the stores. Very little snow.

Not much better in Bangkok where is it 33C outside and all the stores only have one Christmas tape that the play over and over again.
I did miss my family quite a bit this year. Thanks for giving me a chance to express that. |

It's almost as if it wasn't a traditional Korean holiday! |

Christmas in Korea used to be more Christmas-y when we were destitute. We'd all go to churches because they gave presents. With 50 won you could buy a roasted sweet-potato. Other kids would gather around you and beg for the potato skin. With 100 won, you could get so much boiled silkworm larvae that you couldn't finish it but wasting food was sin, we always finished it. We'd keep Christmas cards because some of them were so beautifully made. We not only collected stamps but also collected Christmas Seals. We didn't know that they had no value. H.C. Andersen's story of 'Little Match Seller' wasn't fairy-tale for us then, they were realities kept from us by the grown-ups, sort of like 'your dog has to gone to the farm', not 'the garbage pick-up ajossi killed and ate out Lassie'. |

Actually, today is the Boxing Day, the day when the boss and workers exchange places. Make the students teach you, and then tell 'em: Boooring! |

No church? So, why are there so many red neon crucifixes shining at night? |
