Did not some people used to say in these parts a couple of years ago-
"fat people are bad and immoral"? |

Just to add some perspective to those "average weight" statistics, if I weighed what an average Korean woman does, I would be below my healthy recommended minimum. Koreans in general are a lot shorter than I am too. |
To add to this....there is such thing as "skinny fat." Just because you're thin, doesn't mean you're healthy. I may weigh more than most women here but I'm in no way fat and aside from some nagging sports injuries, I am in perfect health. I do however, have a lot of muscle, which is something that most men and women in Korea are lacking. |

Amen. I have the opposite problem... I'm fairly thin but I'm afraid to go to the gym and reveal how out of shape I really am... |

In my second post I wrote that some girls look better a little fat. I stand by it. It seems when they lose that little bit of fat it all goes from their chest. Some girls I would actually encourage NOT to lose weight. |

I second KimchiNinja. Love the damage control in this thread.
"OH, but Koreans are shorter, so of course I'm heavier!"
45 POUNDS HEAVIER?! Give me a break. It's not like Koreans are all 5 feet tall and Americans are all Scandinavian giants.
I doubt Koreans on average are more than a few inches shorter than Americans.
Get real. People on here think they're in shape when they actually look like this (It's Always Sunny fans!) http://www.blogcdn.com/www.aoltv.com/media/2011/08/fat-mac-250.jpg
Oh yeah, I forgot, I'm on Dave's, where everyone is a swimsuit model. |

I don't think weight is a great indicator of fitness. Many people carry the weigh differently.
I'm 6' and around 200lbs. A year ago, I had a pretty big midsection. Now, not so much. But my weight hasn't moved much.
The scale doesn't bother me, it's got little to do with my fitness goals. |

FOr a lot of people, being overweight is a visible sign of a lack of self-control.

That's true, about the height. The average Korean is about 5'2", while the average American is just under 5'4". Not too much difference. I, however, am a few inches taller than the average American woman. Interesting that you should mention "giant" Scandinavians, since my ancestors actually are.
Though just to be clear, I never said I was skinny, or looked anything like a supermodel (notwithstanding that I'd be too old anyway, heheh). I said if I was the weight of an average Korean, I would be below my recommended minimum BMI. I am certainly not anywhere near that, and could even stand to lose a few pounds. I'm not under any delusions about my own situation. But if and when I do lose weight, my ideal target (according to the university where I got a thorough body composition check and health consultation a few years back) is about 20 pounds heavier than the Korean average.
EDIT: Oops, I meant 20, not 30. Stupid keypad, with the numbers all up next to each other....

This would be funny. Fat white guy with really pasty skin modeling white skivvies on a Korean billboard. An act of defiance if you will. |

I'm kind of curious, what is nature's definition of a healthy body shape? Especially given that nature allows people to become fat in the first place. |

Ftlog don't follow bmi. So many people in Korea fall under the skinny fat category. 175cm 60kg seems to be the average male, but not an oz of muscle on them. I have quite a few Korean friends who complain about their inability to put on weight, but they refuse to lift. And they look at me like I'm insane when I tell them that they are skinny fat. That they only look skinny but they are really fat. If they don't have any muscle what could their body mass consist of. It's annoying arguing with them about that and I always find myself alone in my corner, so I just smile and nod. |
