The end is nigh for me here in Korea and I plan on taking an extended vacation, hopefully without breaking the bank.

I'm heading to China via the Incheon ferry to Tianjin, then to Vietnam, Cambodia/Laos, and finally to Bangkok before flying to Portland, OR...and eventually to Auckland NZ.

What would be the cheapest way to do this?

My plan is to fly from Beijing to Vietnam, then train down south and cross border into Cambodia, then bus it or fly to Laos, then bus or fly to Bangkok. From Bangkok I need to fly to Portland and then on to Auckland.

As tickets in Korea are relatively cheap is it worth it to...

Fly from Bangkok-Korea-Portland-Korea-Auckland and buy all the tickets here in Korea? From what I gather I can't get tickets for flights originating in the US from an overseas agent (airlines don't recognize them).

How about tickets from Laos/Cambodia? Is it easy to get flights or should I just hire a taxi, train, or bus to either country?

Does anyone have any experience taking massive trips like this and arranging all the tickets in advance? Thanks for the help.

I have considered multi-stop airfares through the Lonely Planet website:

http://www.lonelyplanet.com/travel_services/trvl_air.cfm

You might find it affordable to go to Thailand, New Zealand and America.

Good luck whatever.

I'll check out the site but I'm ending in New Zealand as I will be relocating there.

Thanks

Edit - Emailed the kind folks, they quoted a price between 1500-1800 bucks US from Bangkok-Portland-Auckland. I'll see what else I can drum up.

See if you can get an around the word ticket. A friend in Oz does this regularly. It allows you 35,000 air miles. He just goes where he wants within the group he has booked with. He does it through Flight Centre in Brisbane. Smile
