Hi! This is my first post.
It appears many hagwons offer both English and music classes. Are foreigners routinely hired to teach both, perhaps as part of a total-immersion program? What about public, special, and international schools? Are foreign music teachers limited to choral/general music, or can they teach instruments through schools as well?
Thank you! |

With the exception of properly (internationally) accredited "International Schools" they do not need a foreigner to teach music (there are lots of Koreans who can teach music and/or instruments).
At a hagwon you will be an English teacher. (some kindy teachers teach multiple subjects in English or are home room teachers so may also teach songs, dancing, playtime, etc.).
At a public school you will be an English teacher. Music is taught in Korean by Koreans.
Teaching music outside of work is in violation of your status of sojourn and puts your visa at risk if reported.

ttompatz,
That's very helpful information and answers my questions.
FYI, I do know one person who was granted an E-class visa to teach (only) Suzuki strings at a community music school in Korea for one year...but the school does not offer English, which I want to teach, too. Oh, well! Hopefully after a year I will qualify for the F-2 visa (only need 3 more points!). |
