Iconoclastic filmmaker Nagisa Oshima, best known internationally for his wildly controversial movie In the Realms of the Senses died today at the age of 80 in a hospital outside of Tokyo.
A former law student and radical activist, Oshima made his directorial debut in 1959 with Town of Love and Hope. The movie established him as a leader of the budding Japanese New Wave, which also included directors like Shohei Imamura and Masahiro Shinoda.

Best known for Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence and In The Realm Of The Senses. I saw the latter at an art house in Edmonton, back in the late 80s/early 90s some time. It certainly lived up to its reputation as being one of the most sexually explicit non-porn movies ever made.
My friends and I used to joke about how the film purported to be a critique of Japanese militarism in the 1930s, and what exactly the hard-boiled egg was supposed to symbolize.

Well, somewhat less memorable if viewed in Korea, where it has been bowdlerized beyond all recognition, as it has in several other countries, including Japan itself.
But yes, in its uncensored form, definitely lodges itself in your consciousness. |
