I have a visa check card from the Industrial Bank of Korea(IBK). The bank told me that I could use this bank in Thai ATM's and in Cambodia too. I specifically went to the bank to tell them I was going on vacation to Thailand and Cambodia. I gave them the dates. When I arrived in Thailand I found my card had been blocked. I had used the card in Shanghai Airport on the road to Thailand with no trouble at all.
I suspect that the bank blocked my card because someone noticed I was using it at Shanghai Airport-where I did not say I was going. They decided I must be a thief or something. But it seems paranoid.

I wonder if the IBK Bank has an English helpline? If so, please get in touch with me! I found an English helpline for the bank but I keep getting women's voices saying the number does not exist. I am using my U.K. account and it works fine. BUT I wanted to keep that account for SAVINGS and remittances. I am here till January 29th, and I have more money in the Korean account. Thoughtful and helpful replies please, no cynical wisecracks.

It it the number +82-31-888-8000 that failed you?

When you dial this number, you were supposed to hear lengthy automated announcement in Korean, followed by a comment in English that you should press extension 571 for English service.

as long as it's not an atm card you should have been fine. some banks require that you "enable" your check card to be used overseas. have you used it in a foreign country before?

if so and it did get blocked it's very strange. most banks here don't really block foreigner cards but will call a korean on the drop of a dime if there is any transaction made outside of korea.

i will go to 4 different countries in 2 days and such and my bank has never called me once or blocked my card.

Some cards only work in ATM machines overseas. I was given a visa checkcard after some discussion about E-2 visa holders not being able to have one. When I got it, I found out it was only useful at ATMS not for making purchases. My wife's card could make purchases. I can't understand this why there is yet a different card for foriegners. Even going back to the bank and explaining what I wanted with F-6 visa now, KEB still sent me the same type card....My wife will be going again to take care of business.
