|

I got in to a pretty heated discussion with some of my elementary students that of course believe jumping rope will make them taller. Or that basketball will make them tall. One boy just entering puberty said 'No, teacher, I started playing basketball and I'm getting taller!'
Another smarter student insisted that I bring in evidence that proves that jumping rope doesn't work. The problem is I'm not finding any scientific papers that specifically deal with this. Lots on how the body grows taller but nothing refuting or debunking bogus 'get tall quick' scams.
Does anyone have any resources for this? |

They're on to bad science or no science at all. |

Not sure why someone would feel the need to tell these kids they're wrong over something so harmless. I'd bet it's a little white lie somebody told them that so they would get into physical activities more. |

For some reason my mom would always tell me that basketball would make me taller, not sure why she thought that.
I hate that sport btw |

Why are you getting in to a heated discussion with elementary school students. |

When I say heated, I don't mean to imply that we were shouting at each other, just that when the topic came up it was something the whole class jumped in on and expressed their opinion. It was the quietest girl in the class that demanded evidence and even told me not to make it up. And when I grinned at them and told them that jumping rope and basketball would not make them taller, they all got upset with me. Albeit in that slightly pouty way that 12 year old girls have. It was a good-natured discussion but they were very insistent that all the time they spent with their jump ropes would make them taller. |

Proper nutrition, adequate sleep and moderate exercise are all elements that contribute to an individual's growth along with genetics, of course. Individuals who do not get enough food, sleep or exercise will not attain their maximum potential height. |

Yep, sounds like a good guess. |

Come on guys this is basic science 101. All types of vigorous exercise results in an increase in the human growth hormone, which results in kids growing taller than they would have if they had just sat on their butts.
So to answer your question, yes, the kids are right. But it's not just jumping rope or basketball, it can be any type of vigorous exercise. |

Do you really need to prove them wrong? Come on, man. They're kids. What is the purpose of arguing with them. Besides, if they want to believe that physical exercise is good for them then by all means let them think that. It's probably something that their parents or teachers told them so that they'd get off the couch and stay fit. |

Yeah, I thought it was obvious too. I just thought exercises that require body stretching would be even more beneficial. Why else would there be so many sources recommending it and none disproving it. |

I played basketball almost everyday for years and I'm 166cm...I'll be your scientific proof. |

it's 100% genetic. from your parents, grandparents, and also from
your own dna..
this is why we see kids who tower over their parents, not because they played
basketball, or ate Kimchi, but because of their own unique genes.
you can't do something to make you taller! LOL |

Nonsense.
& you contradict yourself: if its a 100% genetic, then kids would turn out the same height as their parents, not "tower over" them.
Korean heights on average have skyrocketed in recent years. I've watched it. I switched from an urban school to a country school a couple years ago & the kids there are markedly shorter than their city peers. Also markedly poorer. Not surprisingly, North Koreans are inches shorter again.
I dont know how much of a role exercise plays but diet is unarguably a major factor. A generation ago many Korean families ate meat infrequently & seldom consumed dairy products. |
