So, Korea has brought some new regulations into effect for 2013. Some seem smart, some seem long overdue, others...
But the one I simply cannot understand is the one about individuals/businesses paying more for food waste. I have no idea how it is going to be enforced, or how high the fees would be.
But the way I see it, this is going to cause two issues: One, folks will be more likely to mix their food waste into their regular trash in order to avoid higher fees. Two, people will eat more instant food, instead of fresh fruits and vegetables (which are already getting very pricey). At the very least, restaurants, who will surely be the hardest hit by a law like this, will start switching out fresh ingredients for packaged ones.
What is the benefit to the government or Korea in general? Why wouldn't they increase the fees for regular trash, instead of food waste? |
