Canada isn't living up to its potential or its reputation when it comes to societal issues like poverty, government and inequality, according to the Conference Board of Canada.
The group gave Canada a 'B', good for a 7th place ranking out of 17 developed countries, but it said the "middle-of-the-pack" ranking leaves room for improvement.
Getting an 'A' at the top of the rankings were the Scandinavian nations (Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland) as well as the Netherlands and Austria. At the bottom were Japan and the U.S., both getting a 'D' ranking.
... Lafleur calls the report myth-busting of the idea of Canada as a kindler, gentler nation,...

Actually the lower ranking is a result of goverment cutbacks since the 90's. |

FFS. Here we have the whole of the limited vocational opportunities in the Canadian economy boiled down to "cutbacks in the 90's". Unbelievable.
There's a great book on the limitations of Canadian business called "Why Mexicans Don't Drink Molson". Start there.
Government cutbacks in the 90's. Good lord. Not free trade, mass immigration (increasing the available pool of labor while as the same time diminishing the need for labor), the over-dependance on natural resources, the complete inability and zero effort by most Canadian firms to market themselves abroad, etc. Government cutbacks in the 90's. Unreal. |

Please see the original article. It was about Canada falling behind because of an increase in economic inequality. Look at the countries that ranked ahead of Canada. European social democracies. |

Most of which also had to make cuts in the 90s, especially Sweden. Nice try though.
From the Economist this week:
Quote: |
Sweden fell from being the fourth-richest country in the world in 1970 to the 14th in 1993.
Since then the Nordics have changed coursemainly to the right. Governments share of GDP in Sweden, which has dropped by around 18 percentage points, is lower than Frances and could soon be lower than Britains. Taxes have been cut: the corporate rate is 22%, far lower than Americas. The Nordics have focused on balancing the books. While Mr Obama and Congress dither over entitlement reform, Sweden has reformed its pension system (see Free exchange). Its budget deficit is 0.3% of GDP; Americas is 7%. |
