OK

I feel really idiotic. I have no cell phone and am in a motel and want to order food.

The number seems local and is 7 digits. Yet I can't get past the dial tone! When I push all 7 numbers, nothing happens, just the dial tone.

Help???

Generally, you have to dial 8 first, then dial the number. Note that most hotels/yeogwans in which I've stayed in Korea only permit calling to numbers in the hotel's area/city code. For example, if you're staying in a hotel in Busan with the area code of 051 and try to dial a land-line in Busan, you shouldn't have a problem. If you wish to call a friend's cell phone number, you're out of luck because the area/city code for the cell is not 051.

Ugh, the 8 didn't work. This is really frustrating.

Dialing 8 (or any number) seems to give the dial tone a pause... But as soon as I start pushing the local number, it goes back to the dial tone.

And I'm dialing a 7-digit number for various food advertisements inside the motel so I'm pretty sure they're local...

Sad

Some places require you to dial 8 first, others require 9 first. They all, at least in my experience, require you to dial the full local phone number including the area code. Oh, and some places only incoming calls are possible.

Repeat: Dial the full 10-digit number including the area code.

Typically, its 9 to dial out. Failing that, ask at the front desk.

I love when people ask the internet how telephones work.

My own motel experience: Each key of the phone was a speed dial to a different hooker service (photos supplied in the room). I wonder if you could ask one to pick up a burger or kimbap on the way to your room?
