Hello most wise and enriched travelers. Two of us are looking to travel from Korea (or in Korea) duruing the new year. We work at a hagwon in Changwon and we will have the 9th through the 11th off.
We want to have a great time experiencing something extra ordinary and from the sounds of it Korea has a grand time with their families... Thought about a quick flight to China but I have not found many resources showing anything but the best waiting lines ever imagined.
I would love to hear what you or your friends are doing. Thanks in advance! Very Happy

If you want to go ANYWHERE in Korea (outside of your 'hood), you should've booked your train ticket on January 9 and January 11 (when Korail started selling tickets 30 days out). 99% chance everything is sold out on all kinds of trains, even standing tickets.

You could take a bus, but you will be stuck in DISGUSTING traffic. Also, those bitches will be full, too!

Peach Air had flights to Osaka for 250,000 KRW RT all in, but the times were both afternoon departures, making it hard to maximize the short time you have.

Good luck! I live in Sanbon (Seoul suburb), so I just plan to stay in Seoul for a change.

EDIT: I just checked on Korail's English site and there actually are seats on a lot of KTX trains for 2 ppl! At all times of the day. Quite surprised!

Have you been to Gyeongju? It's a good day trip. So is Danyang.

My next Korea trip is going to be a weekend in Gwangju with some friends. I heard good things.

Of the 20 million people in the Seoul metro area, maybe 5 million have roots that go more than two generations (probably less). The rest come from the rest of the country. So during the two big holidays most people go back to their traditional hometowns.

During Seolla and Chuseok getting into Seoul at the beginning and leaving Seoul at the end of the the holidays is pretty much a non-issue. However, the Saemaeul and Mugunghwa are generally packed on regular weekends, I recommend taking the bus.

Train/bus tickets aside, what about closures?

I know a lot of things in Seoul close down. Is it safe to assume the rest of the country does too?

That's a pretty good deal. I saw that Air Busan had flights for 200,000 KRW, but you didn't have much choice on flight times.

I agree with Mikesaidyes in checking out Gyeongju if you haven't already.
There is also lots to see and do in Busan. I was thinking of going to Beijing although flights are pretty booked and it will be craaazy there.

As for me I'm heading to Seoul on the KTX.
