I am a bit confused about the tense/grammar point of the following sentence:

"We like trying new things"

It's in the simple tense, but not sure what exactly it is. Is it in the present simple? (the confusing part is the -ing), is it a gerund? is it in the present continuous? It looks like a mix of present simple and present continuous.

I'm confused. What it is, and how to explain what it is grammatically.

like the guy above me said simple present + a gerund

With the verb like there can be a gerund or an infinitive
eg I like to read I like reading. They both have the same meaning.
But some verbs can only have a geruns such as finish. Example I finished doing my homework. Can't really say the following. I finished to do my homework. There are verbs that only take infinitives as well. And some verb take both but have different meanings. Such as stop. I stopped watching tTVs. And I stopped to watch TVs. The verb would like only accepts an infinitive after it. I would like to use this forum.
