Another question, if I miss my flight because of the short layover will I be boarded on another flight? For an International flight something tells me not. |
I unfortunately have a lot of experience to answer this question.
If you have a single ticket (i.e. it's a true layover scheduled by the airline, not because you bought separate tickets), once you board the plane the airline is responsible and they will find another flight for you or will re-route you through a different airport.
If you bought separate tickets, it's your responsibility to make the second flight on time. |
The tickets were purchased on Expedia. Actually they were purchased for me, I did not pay for the tickets myself. |

I often catch a flight with just 45 minutes to spare through Vancouver on a flight in destination to Toronto. Many passengers from the Incheon-Vancouver leg take the Vancouver to Toronto flight. I go through Customs in Toronto.
Will you have to clear Customs in Chicago? If not, I'd say that it could be doable (without knowing anything about the airport). Check with the airline. Ask them if your luggage will be automatically transferred to your other flight. If that's the case, then run like hell as soon as you get off the plane. |

Since you used tickets as a plural, does that mean you have two separate tickets? One ticket to Chicago and another Chicago-Munich? If that's the case you're pushing it, any delay at all and the airline may not be obligated to honour the ticket. You should call the airline and check. |

No not separate tickets, it's one print out from Expedia. The flights are a one time purchase from Expedia. The purchase includes a United Airlines - Shuttle America flight to Chicago, and a 45 minute layover before a Lufthansa flight to Munich. After that there is a two and a half hour layover in Munich before a flight to the final country. |

In that case, if I wasn't in a dire hurry I wouldn't worry about it. You'll get there eventually even if it means routing through a different country. |

So I assume your final destination is somewhere in Europe.
If you miss your connecting flight in Chicago they will easily re-route you through Frankfurt or any other major hubs in Europe and from there to your final destination. Got re-routed several times because of delays and weather and always arrived to my final destination no more than 1-2 hours later or even earlier than the original arrival time.
My shortest ever layover was in Chicago. I arrived from a US airport so needed no customs and immigration. My arrival gate and the next flights gate were luckily right next to each other so I literally spent 1 minute at the airport. The departing plane was all boarded they were only waiting for me. I was headed for Frankfurt on a United flight. Amazingly my luggage made it as well. |

When you check in at your original departing airport, let them know about the short lay-over time and ask if they can provide either a guide or one of those golf carts for you, since you don't know where the gate is. Most airlines are accommodating.
I actually don't mind if my luggage takes a different route than I do. It just means that the airline has to deliver it to my door instead of me having to drag the stuff around. Be sure to pack a change of clothes and necessities in your carry-on. |

I'm surprised at the number of people who say "don't worry you'll just get rerouted"
The whole point is to not get rerouted! Rerouting can and will add huge amounts time, headaches and frustration to your travel. Especially if you have another connecting flight in Munich. It's not like planes leave for Germany every 10 minutes. People make it seem like it's a bus and Ill just catch the next one.
I hope you update us on what happens. I'm also a little confused why your flying through the US to go to Europe. |

I don't think so, he has a 45minute layover on what I assume is a short hop. That's plenty of time if he hurries. And it's not like he's flying to Timbuctu. He could route through Frankfurt, Amsterdam, London, New York and has a 2.5 hour cushion in Munich. As long as the airline is paying for it, you just gotta go with it. I've missed connecting flights many times due to no fault of my own. They usually give you vouchers for meals and stuff and sometimes bump you up to first class if coach is full. I'd say absolutely worst case scenario 4 hours added to his total trip time. (* Not including delays due to other reasons than missing his layover such as hailstorms, exploding volcanoes, major airline SNAFUs, etc.) |

My final destination is Riyadh Saudi Arabia. The company says the boarding passes for the complete journey will be issued in my originating city. The luggage goes all the way to Riyadh. |

There's no problem then. They'll re-route you through Frankfurt, Dubai, Paris, or a dozen other possible airports. |

Been busted before in O'Hare. Arriving flight was running late. I tried to run across the airport to make my connection (I was already checked in for an international flight) but watched it leave the gate.
I spent the night in Chicago, and hate O'Hare.
I mean if it's booked already then maybe there's not much you can do. Probably wouldn't hurt to call the airline itself and ask them if it will suffice. If you just plan to roll with things then I hope your flight arrives earlier than scheduled, or that silkhighway's advice is on the money. |
