YES - it is a national hol for CONTRACT workers, so normal Korean FT teachers will have to work.

We in theory should not work, as 99.99999% of us are contract teachers.

BUT lots of schools will be doing sports day on this day.

I can see Principals being pissy that their waygookin' teacher doesnt have to help put stuff up & also 'show the parents' the waygookin'!

All EPIK/GEPIK people should approach their city/regional coordinator.

Get them to get the local POE to send out 'official docs' to the schools saying the NET MUST be given this day off.

I'm going to come to school anyway, because like I said sports day - will be prob done by lunch.

And Im getting days off that the school doesnt HAVE TO GIVE ME OFF!

give and take! Razz

Hagwon workers ha ha, good look, every man/woman for themselves!

Bless the government for doing this - It's like having a 'color off day'

Whites come to work, others take a rest - all it does is breed resentment!

re: epik. I got clarification from the supervisor at the POE (Gangwondo).

Public schools are open May 1. As of the new spring 2013 contract for epik teachers, May 1st is stipulated as a day off. This will not apply to epik teachers working under earlier contracts. Individual schools may require affected teachers to work, but will pay them overtime for that day. School accountants have been informed about this.

Banks will be closed that day. I dont know about govt offices.

So there you go - gangwon ppl, you've now got a concrete answer!

It will be interesting to see if GEPIK does the same - given their logic with old vs new contracts with regards to hols and pay in the past! Cool

How is it a contract issue with GEPIK schools?

For some reason, and my guess is a lack of communication, it has become more complicated than it should have been.

New final word from my POE. All schools in Gangwondo have been informed that its a day off for all epik teachers, whether stated in the contract or not. Should a school still require their teacher to work that day, overtime will be calculated at about double time & a half (based on a normal workday).

It depends on the individual school and teachers contact. But most likely no, hagwons only close if and when they have to. I worked at hagwons the 3 previous May 1st and only 1 year was it a holiday. This year I'm at an after school program and we're currently working (may change).

Laughing

I didn't even get Christmas Day off (I work at CDI). No, I would say with 100% certainty that CDI teachers will not get May 1st off.
