I'm wondering if it's possible to bring a phone from the USA and have it used on the Korean cell networks. What type of phone does it have to be? Would a GSM phone work? Does it matter if it's Sprint/Verizon/etc? Thanks

this wikipedia page has some basic information to go off of. basically, their networks support CDMA technology and LTE.

You should be able to bring any modern "GSM" phone to Korea and activate it. Korea runs WCDMA for 3G (different from CDMA for 2G), and WCDMA is what is in most countries worldwide for "3G".

If you are planning on buying a phone from the US, make sure it's a "GSM/3G" phone (T-Mobile, AT&T), not a CDMA phone (Verizon, Sprint). The exception to this is the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5. (iPhone 4 Verizon model will not work in Korea).

Sprint iPhone 5's have been known to have problems with texting on networks outside of Sprint.
