Why choose a prepaid phone instead of a contract phone?
To purchase a contract phone you must have an Alien Registration Card (ARC).
This is because all phones in Korea must be registered to an individual using a national identification number, which you wonít have until you receive your ARC.
E-2 visa holders wonít receive their ARCs until at least a month after arriving in the country, and in the meantime a prepaid phone is the only option.
In addition, contract phones come on 24 month plans, so if you leave after one year you will need to pay a cancellation fee and the remaining unpaid cost of the phone.
Even if you bring your own smartphone to Korea, you wonít be able to register it and get on a contract until you get your ARC and a Korean bank account.
Thatís why most English teachers use prepaid phones instead of contract phones when they come to Korea.
