My final exams start next week.

The students will have to give 2 speeches, and an interview with me.

This is how I will grade each speech. Does anyone have any other ways to grade them?

Clearly spoken poor good excellent
Interesting poor good excellent
Delivery poor good excellent
On Topic poor good excellent

I wouldn't grade them on whether their dialogues are 'interesting' or 'on topic'. It's too subjective to use as some of your main criteria, in my opinion. Just give them a couple of extra points for that if you feel they deserve it.

Also, you need to clearly define what is 'poor', 'good' and 'excellent' before you start in order to ensure that your grading is as objective and consistent as possible. Here's an example of what I mean: http://www.eslgo.com/resources/sa/oral_evaluation.html

How about considering grammar and vocabulary? You've told the students to use what you've studied in class, right?

Speech Scoring for My Uni Students

1. STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

(a) Presence of: hook, introduction to topic, outline, why should the audience listen, 3 distinct sections, clear signal to close, recap of the main points, final thoughts

(b) Interesting content (part my score, part the audiences score); useful information (they had to do a "How to" speech, so obviously it had to achieve this goal)

(c) Slides: design, grammar, connection with the speech, grammar and spelling

2. LANGUAGE

Presence and effectiveness of:

(a) Signposting
(b) Linking phrases
(c) Simple, clear vocabulary appropriate for a speech
(d) Rhetorical devices
(e) Rapport

3. VOICE

Effectiveness of:

(a) Pronunciation
(b) Speed
(c) Volume
(d) CSI (chunking, stress, intonation)

4. BODY LANGUAGE

Effectiveness of:

(a) Eye contact
(b) Gestures
(c) Posture and movement
(d) Attitude

NO specific mark for grammar, because that freaks them out and becomes the only thing they focus on, leading to copying of material from other places. I say as long as I and the audience understand it, you have done your job. (Obviously, if the grammar is very poor, this will affect the content score, as the information won't be useful)

Works well in my classes. We do a lot of practice on them beforehand though so they are comfortable with all the categories.
