My friend wants to fly to Korea on a one-way ticket. He'll probably stay for 80 days and then catch a ferry over to Japan and then come back for another long stay? How does Korea react to this. Will they give him problems on entry because he doesn't have departing ticket? |

It's not the Korean Immigration who check, it is actually the check-in agent at the airline departure point who checks. Your friend needs a creative, convincing way to get through that check-in. Having a ferry ticket in hand would be good, except he wouldn't want to buy it 80 days ahead... Maybe having something that looked like a ferry ticket, or a printout of a ferry ticket that was then later cancelled...
I would call the airline and see what they say about the check-in. If it an US carrier, the phone workers don't have a clue what the check-in staff do though. |

You (your friend) will need an exit ticket (does NOT have to be a return ticket) or the airline may not board him for the flight to Korea.
Options:
-Try to get through the check-in without it and be prepared to buy an expensive ticket at the airport to satisfy them if they give you grief.
-Buy a disposable ticket to anywhere (the Philippines can be cheap) since he will need it anyway. A ferry ticket will also work.
-Buy a 6-month (or 1-year) open return ticket (contact a travel agent or the airline directly for this one). They are more expensive but satisfy the requirements and leave your options (and dates) for your return home open.
