I teach both singles and classes at my hogwan. Today I learned that one of my singles is stopping the class. I'm assuming it's friendly since she gave me her phone number.

That's two hours a week teaching that's been cut. For some reason I feel bad about. It's either because I feel like I am becoming less useful or I expect to have the time filled teaching the younger students more. *shudder*

I usually dont feel guilty.

There are many reasons that students stop coming.

They move.

Their family suffered some financial setback and cant afford the tuition.

They are going to a higher level hogwan....many of my students stopped coming because we were classified as an elementary hogwan and they went to a middle school hogwan.

You havent been able to turn them into fluent English geniuses with the crappy curriculum you have. Rolling Eyes

They left because they had no interest in being there and were forced to attend because their parents made them.

They left because you weren't entertaining enough for them.

They left because ................................? fill in the blank

A little bit.....but in the big revolving door of the hagwon world people come and people go.

I try to find out why they left and usually I'm told they have moved(whether this is true or not I don't know however).

This student was an adult, so some of those reasons don't necessarily apply.

Yes.
In the case of younger students.....it's often the parents who make the decision.

In the seven months I have been at my hogwan I have seen many students quit mostly because of money.

Today I found out our hogwan charges between 250,000-100,000 won a month

As compared to 80,000-50,000 won at the other hogwans

Over the years and from experience I have found that in korea, students quit for:

1) If in a class and the students don't all mesh, a few will drop. They all seem to want to form a friendship with each other and some just don't mix well so they leave.
2) Money
3) They or their parents don't like the school owner
4) They don't like the book or lesson
5) To easy or to difficult
6) Their friends are in another school and brag about it being better then the school they are at.
7) Moving to another area
8) The class time interferes with something else they are doing.
9) They dont like the teacher or the teachers style of teaching.
10) They dont like the bus driver.
11) Bullies.
12) Their parents think that little Johnny is not learning at the speed they should be.
13) And a few other nonsense reasons

If you teach privates or one on one in a classroom, some of the same reasons apply and a few more with adults.
If the teacher is a male and the student is a female or vice versapersonalities clash or the student thinks that the teacher is exhibiting or asking how about a date get to know you type of thing.
Some think perhaps I like this teacher but I cant control my emotions and I better quit before it gets out of hand.
Some female students have BFs/husbands and the BF/husband gets jealous that his GF/wife is always talking about him or vice versa with female teachers to male students.
In any event, why worry! Nothing you can do about it usually. 8)

Yeah, Hagwon hoppers generally for me, but nowadays I'm mostly business classes and am experiencing about a 50% turnout for the larger classes. 4 or 5 of the students haven't showed up at all in my biggest class of 20. A bit soul destroying, but what're you gonna do... take a rope and a chair or get a life?

Squid the understanding.

Be careful she is not expecting free lessons and quit because she feels she will get them.

Oh no, really, I hope no young students would be that silly.

Now if one of their teachers is offering them a Twisted Evil great discount on the private - hmm.

Not that i've ever done it, to me it's low low low.

Those cheap hagwons are called Խ hagwons. They don't have foreigners. That's why they are cheap.

That certainly came across my mind soon after I hung up the phone.
