quavashake, tell us again about why we see rainbows in the sky? What is the bible's scientific explanation for this? An angry man-deity, after committing mass murder, put it there as a promise not to commit the mass murder of men, women, childen, the invalid, elderly, infants, handicapped and chronically ill ever again.
I thought rainbows were caused by light reracting off water droplets. Silly me. I really wish the bible had been emphasized more in my high school science class.
Oh, well. |

Based on 13 pages and the last post, and it having nothing to do with Korea or Canada, I am going to guess 'religion' or perhaps 'gay' as being the current point of debate. |

Believe it or not, the whole point of posting this thread was to get a few laughs. I wish I'd never brought it up. Although, it really doesn't hold a candle to Dairyairy's thread on the Frozen movie. |

Discovery Institute, really? You really are stretching it. If readers are not informed about the Discovery Institute, please consult the following: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Scientific_Dissent_From_Darwinism#Counter-petitions
The Discovery Institute is a completely discredited organization that tries to promote creationism under the ruse of 'Intelligent Design.' They are the "teach the controversy" crowd, where there is no controversy. It's like giving equal time to cosmologists and the flat earth society. Why would anyone agree to that? Because it's unreasonable, and there is zero real evidence for a flat earth. The same is true of intelligrent design.
Although they got 700 scientists from around the world to sign their petition of "skepticism" about evolution (being able to account for all living things), it's not as impressive as it seems. The statement continues that Darwinian "claims and evidence should continue to be thoroughly examined". Um, that's not very controversial. It's not as if scientists are opposed to skepticism. It is at the very heart of the scientific method. Skepticism about inherited claims about human origins, as supported by the likes of Discovery Institute, are what led to the discovery of the fact of evolution. And although 700 scientists signed this non-controversial petition, that number comprises no more than 0.023% of the world's scientists. The other 99.977% of scientists did not sign it. (The poster above failed to mention that little gem.) A close examination of the names on the list, moreover, show that many of the scientists aren't even biologists. Cosmology, however important, has nothing to say about evolution. People can be knowledgable in one field, and surprisingly ignorant about another. And when we add the fact that many scientists were born and raised as theists, and continue to be theists, of course you are going to get signatories on petitions such as this. Unfortunately facts trump inherited beliefs every time.
My last point: although creationists got 700 scientists to sign their peitition the National Center for Science Education, treating the petition with the light-hearted mockery it deserves, got a counter-petition going consisting exclusively of scientists with the first name "Steve" who supported the facts concerning evolution. Just scientists call "Steve". They got 1,283 signatories.
So much for those 700 signatories from all around the world. |

Yeah, the creationist bunch do play that 'appeal to the authority' game rather too much, don't they. Put a 'Reverend' in front your name or put Ph.D after it and spout some 'cannot be disproved' arguments, they think the great masses of 'not-so-smarts' will be won over. Yes, and no. The audience will fein belief in anything as long as it's convenient for them. Whether it be evolutionists or creationists, as soon as their convenience has run out, they'll be discarded. Aren't we a selfish bunch? |

Scorpion, just tell them that evolution is intelligent design. If they want to hang on to the notion that there is a god or something at work, then evolution shows them a pattern, not just evolution but all scientific theories that have been repeatedly tested and work time and again. That is not chaos. There is an order. |

The subtitle of the statement reads "Careful examination of the evidence for Darwinian theory should be encouraged." Nowhere does it state that the theory of evolution is wrong. It certainly never suggests that the idea of creationism is correct.
That's what science is for: The evidence for evolutionary theory is being carefully examined, and it's passing the test. These 700 signatures are just affirmation that these people want scientists to be careful. Duh!
I'm willing to bet that many of these scientists didn't even know that what they were signing was going to be used in an anti-evolution spiel. |

Quavashake, do you have anything else? After Julius ran away we kind of hoped you'd put in a better showing. We'd like to have you back, especially so you can clarify that story in Genesis about the rainbow.
Please come back, otherwise I have to go back to discussing Korean stuff again.
I promise to go easier on you next time. |

There was a post a while back and it reminded me about this;
http://www.wnd.com/2014/02/bon-voyage-launch-set-for-real-noahs-ark/
and this;
http://arkencounter.com
What interested me though, was the cost at (US) 73 million and the church were looking for another 15 in donations ($ 88 million total - I dont know how many loaves of bread that would be to feed the poor, but it must be more than 100).
Noah must have been saving up for months to pay for the original!
I was also interested as to how long it took to build but found this which was way more interesting (for all the cynics that joke that Noah must have been 900 years old);
"First, the Bible does not teach that Noah was 900 years old when he constructed the Ark. He lived for 350 years after the Flood began and died at 950 (Genesis 9:28–29). The Flood began in his 600th year (Genesis 7:11), and he undoubtedly spent several years constructing the Ark prior to this, so he would have been in his 500s while building the Ark (Genesis 5:32)."
And if that doesn't convince you it really happened, nothing will... |
