NEW YORK, N.Y. - Singer-songwriter Lesley Gore, who topped the charts in 1963 at age 16 with her epic song of teenage angst, "It's My Party," and followed it up with the hits "Judy's Turn to Cry," and the feminist anthem "You Don't Own Me," died Monday. She was 68.

I liked a few of her songs, even though I don't think I really knew until now that she was the singer. She was one of those peripheral names that I never firmly attached to a face or a persona.
You Don't Own Me
Not so much feminist solidarity on Judy's Turn To Cry. |

Ah, I remember some of her songs well, listening to top 40 stations on my transistor radio as a tweener when that stuff really speaks to you. It was just pre-Beatles. |
