This happened a week ago but it is a significant step for Canada in Asia as it is the first bilateral trade deal that Canada signs with an asian economic power.

The deal itself has received mixed reviews here in Canada and from what I hear also in Korea. This seems normal as all the clauses in the agreement are not yet all understood or clear.

Lots of opportunities for companies (Korean and Canadian) in that deal. The tarrif drops for Canadian goods imported into Korea is a significant gain for canuck businesses and exporters.

And the nascent LNG sector in particular, which has fierce competition from the US, Australia and Qatar. The advantages to the Canadian projects are the lower temperature (=less cost to reach the temperature required to liquify the gas) and greater proximity to Asia, and the removal of the 3% LNG tariff to Korea is a big help. The Liberals in BC are particularly happy about that given how much is at stake for them with these projects.

I would say those that are most happy in Canada about this deal are:

Cereal farmers, oil producers (possibly), pork producers

I would say those that are unhappy are:

The auto industry in Ontario as US car plants there will face stiffer competition.

Well, Korea will still deal with Japan & China for many things....

In fact, most western countries rely on Asia in significant fashion for their import goods....
