In years past I had to get a single re-entry visa at the airport if I wanted to take a trip outside Korea and then return to Korea and keep my E2 visa.

When I asked at the airport this time, the woman at the counter told me that that was not necessary and that I was allowed one trip outside Korea. Has the law indeed changed, or did I just get misled by a misinformed official?

Yep, changed several years ago, thankfully. As long as you have a valid visa, no reentry stamps are necessary.

Edit to clarify: it's not just okay for one trip, but for as many re-entries as you want/need. You might have noticed that they also don't put full page work visa stickers in your passport anymore, and if you've gotten a new ARC, it's no longer the hokey looking writing on the back with marker kind.

The law changed back in 2010.

All registered foreigners (those with an ARC) are allowed unlimited exits and re-entries into Korea for as long as your ARC remains valid.

The ONLY exception to that rule are F5 holders who are limited to 2 consecutive years outside Korea (their ARC may have a longer validity). After that point they lose their F5.
