In years past I had to get a single re-entry visa at the airport if I wanted to take a trip outside Korea and then return to Korea and keep my E2 visa.
When I asked at the airport this time, the woman at the counter told me that that was not necessary and that I was allowed one trip outside Korea. Has the law indeed changed, or did I just get misled by a misinformed official? |

Yep, changed several years ago, thankfully. As long as you have a valid visa, no reentry stamps are necessary.
Edit to clarify: it's not just okay for one trip, but for as many re-entries as you want/need. You might have noticed that they also don't put full page work visa stickers in your passport anymore, and if you've gotten a new ARC, it's no longer the hokey looking writing on the back with marker kind. |

The law changed back in 2010.
All registered foreigners (those with an ARC) are allowed unlimited exits and re-entries into Korea for as long as your ARC remains valid.
The ONLY exception to that rule are F5 holders who are limited to 2 consecutive years outside Korea (their ARC may have a longer validity). After that point they lose their F5.
