Well I am sure the languages varied, but that is pretty accurate.
The Spanish did not conquer swathes of Central and South America with a few hundred foot soldiers and calvary. They enlisted the support of allies who provided them with tens of thousands of levies which when combined with the superior tech and tactics of the Europeans, proved unbeatable.
This pattern was repeated the world over.
Then there was the good old fashioned divide and conquer approach. The Indian Mutiny was put down thanks to the generous support of the Sikhs who had only been recently conquered three years before. There were also very few rebellions in support of the mutineers outside of the Bengal Presidency.
Think of it like this, Britain managed to run Sudan relatively peacefully for half a century with just 50 odd administrators and a few thousand garrison troops. They governed because their rule was advantageous to some groups and they therefore helped to maintain European rule.
The second that changed it didn't really take much to kick the Europeans out. Granted if the European rulers chose to fight it was a lot more complicated, however, the result was exactly the same. |

A bit late but I just saw this now. Actually Palestine was NOT named after the Palestinians.

The PA runs the West Bank. However the other so-called part of "Palestine" (Gaza) is run by Hamas and it passes and administers laws as it sees fit.
