Yup, ranked up there with some big name US, Euro, and other Asian universities. Find and review the rankings. There are all sorts of criteria, and like most, SNU probably excels at some and is found wanting in others.

SNU is a global top 40 overall

Is that true? According to this, they are 120th in the world (and the top ranked Saudi university 157th):

(If one were to average all the "best of" lists, SNU would not be in the top 40. In one list (once) they broke the top 40.)

No. 50 for 2014-2015 according to...

http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/2014-15/world-ranking

Don't know where or when I saw the top 40 ranking. A different list no doubt.

Good to see U of T and UBC in there from Canada, and a rising star in Asia, Singapore.

31...or 32? I'd hate to be in the middle of that discussion (SNU vs. University of Tokyo).

Of course I've seen that above ranking. Many Koreans like to show to to me often. (That's one list and the highest SNU has ever got. Still not bad I suppose.)

I'm surprised U.S. News would even consider them. Say what you want, let the fun begin.

Right. It's believable Korea has one (and only one) university in the world's top #150. Korea's an education obsessed society. SNU is a decent uni (though ranked behind many, many American unis).

According to the Times higher education rankings of last year (2014), SNU is No. 44 and KAIST is at 56.

Maybe they had a Korean person helping them compile the list that year?

Well, in this one, KAIST isn't even in the top 200:
http://www.shanghairanking.com/ARWU2014.html

In this one KAIST is #179:

Are you saying Brits are easily bribed? Smile

Kidding, man; lists vary but the one thing everyone agrees upon is on average American universities are the best there are anywhere in the world (with perhaps the U.K. not far behind).

University ranking systems obviously vary from list to list. I guess it's where they are placing the emphasis. A Korean told me the reason why Korean never does well on those lists is becuase of the lack of international students. Don't know if that's true.

I was under the impression that the QS ranking was the most authoratative.
SNU - 31
KAIST - 51
Pohang - 86

According to the center for world university rankings, best is Yonsei at 107th.

My university is near the 700 mark. I chose it for its location...

Who says they are the most authoritative? Certainly, they are the one ranking Korean unis (and other Asian/other non-United Statesian unis) the highest, but where are you getting they are the best/most reliable?

Your mum told me.

But really, like i said it was just an impression. I am willing to admit that i have no idea. A few years ago a Professor from the University of Chicago gave a talk at company i worked for back home. He mentioned it.
