Hello all, any tips on teaching an adult student who is travelling to America in August? His reading comprehension is pretty good, but he has difficulty when it comes to actually speaking english. He also knows English Grammar pretty well. Most of my textbooks are grammar/reading oriented so any advice is appreciated.

I'd say focus on practical English that a Korean can use when abroad.

Start off with airport vocab, and then move on to other useful stuff:

'how much for a hand job?' 'how old is she?' 'what will she (he) do?' 'does that cost extra?'

Pull out google earth and look at where he will be living, discussion can follow from that.

You can find the local Korean restaurant for him and have them preorder his fav ramen.

Think about what you would have to say for two weeks on your own without any help - teach him that.

Drill him on basic conversation.

Teach him a lot of verbs in the 3 tenses including 'ing'.

Teach 'can' and 'do' and how to use them.

Ive been teaching a 60 year old woman for the past month who is traveling to England in August. When we started she had almost zero English - she is able to express herself clearly to me now and understand most of what I throw at her.

I had a few students like that. It certainly focused our lessons.

I used to ask what city or state they would be visiting and what they liked doing. After a google I could tell him what to keep an eye out for. (I remember reading local reviews for Korean restaurants with many complaints that they were always full, which Koreans take to be a good thing!)

Handling foreign money can be tricky at first, so if you don't still have any American bills or coins, you might make replicas from paper or cardboard so he can practice counting out specified amounts.

Ditto, invite him to practice speaking English as much as possible because that is where the need is. Ask lots of questions that invite a lot of description!

I hope your student enjoys his trip!
