I find Korean women to be a bit hit or miss with their outfits. Often they look great, often they look weird.

Korean men dress terribly.

Wearing hiking gear all the time is quite strange too. It feels like people age overnight and wake up one morning realising their youth is gone and they're going to have to wear hiking gear for the next 30 years, at which time they toss out that gear and start wearing really baggy flowery pants in lurid colours

I love how Korean women (pre-ajumma stage) dress. It's a delight to watch attractive, well-dressed women go by. In my opinion they are some of the best dressed women in the world. And the mini-shorts and mini-skirts almost make the summer endurable. But I must protest the latest trend among young women in Korea. We've all noticed it in recent months and it ain't pretty. It ain't cool, and it ain't edgy. It's just wrong. What am I blathering on about? Well, I'll tell ya. The 'ripped jeans' phase that they're going through. It's caught on like a wildfire and it's awful. It's aesthetically unpleasing...and just plain dumb. I hated the ripped jeans phase back home, and I dislike it even more here.

And here's the kicker. For every woman wearing ripped jeans, that's one woman who's not wearing short-shorts or a skirt with high heels. This is a serious step backwards for women's fashion in Korea, and for my happiness.
Although I agree with most of what you write here, I have to disagree with the title of the thread. Just because you don't like a fashion, does not mean that those who are wearing it are committing a fashion faux pas. Quite the opposite. If something is "in fashion", how can it be a faux pas to wear it(unless of course you wear it in an inappropriate setting, like wearing ripped jeans at a formal wedding).

I would think a fashion faux pas would be more like wearing white shoes after labor day, or socks with sandals, or visible pantie lines...etc...

In response to the OP: I have a friend with a "theory" that young (20-27ish) Korean women take their dress cues from Gangnam prostitutes and don't even realize it. Hear me out--

If you are a post high school Korean woman, age 19 or so, what location in Korea is going to be the epitome of haute coutore and everything trendy? Gangnam. So, you come up from Busan, you go clubbin' and what do you see? Wow, ultra short skirts, platform shoes, make up to the 9's. So, you go back down to Busan with a new fashion sense and impress all your podunk friends. One problem--the other ladies you saw that night aren't regular people who just happen to dress edgy and sexy. No, they were literally prostitutes.

So, Gangnam creates this positive feedback loop. I've noticed, honestly, that Korean women dress more scantilly every year. In a way...I ain't complainin'. At the same time, it does make me a little sad knowing that what they're actually emulating is, many times, just the way that Gangnam prostitutes dress. It's hooker-chic!

Quite possibly the worst male attempt to theorize on women's fashion I have seen in a while. Totally ignores things like TV/The movies/Music videos/The Internet/Fashion Magazines/Fashion Blogs/Fashion Sites/Fashion youtube videos. Besides just knowing what looks good.

You do realize that those podunk people in Busan have these things called 'TV' and 'The Internet', right?

If there is anyone who sounds podunk, its you with this fashion theory. What, back home did everyone sit around in overalls and Wrangler jeans until someone came home from NEW YORK CITY with their fancy schmancy fashions and styles?

This ranks right up there with the posters who claimed Dunkin Donuts was a status symbol and the thread that went for 8+ pages over why women have designer handbags until they got straightened out.

First of all; it's not my theory--I said it in the post.

Second; "What, back home did everyone sit around in overalls and Wrangler jeans until someone came home from NEW YORK CITY with their fancy schmancy fashions and styles?"

Yes, actually. I'm from the midwestern US and Fashion is ABSOLUTELY slow there compared to New York or LA. This is WITH internet, TV, fashion mags, etc.

My friend's theory is obviously just off-the-cuff stuff, but I do think there's something to it. Korean fashion trends don't really follow international trends--a lot of the stuff that hot with HIPSTERS is already 6 months to a year old in other first rate cities. But, we're not talking about hipsters here. We're talking about 19 year old girls who want to look "cute" or "sexy" and their role models are going to be other Korean women. My friend's theory is that a high percentage of the role models in Gangnam are just gonna be prostitutes. Sorry to break it to you but there's a lot of friggin' escorts in Gangnam and if you're naive you're not going to necessarily know that.

19-20yr old women probably get their fashion cues from the internet these days. If all it takes are high heels and a tight dress to look like a escort, then, I guess young women around the world are all taking fashion cues from escorts.

Look dude, it's a "you'll know it when you see it" thing. Furthermore, I'd wager that the actual number of people who take practical fashion cues from the internet (as in, they'll read Vogue online and then replicate that outfit) is quite low. In terms of everyday fashion most people still take their fashion cues from other people.

If you have 100 people, probably 5 of them (trendsetters) are really into haut couture or avant gard fashion. After that, you've got 20 (fashion followers) people who take their cues from those 5 and dress very similar to them. Then there's 50 people (average joes) who like the way that the other 25 dress but it's too OUT THERE for them. So, they won't get into that particular fashion trend until Uniqlo/Gap makes something similiar but slightly less edgy. The rest don't care (parents).

So the reason my friend's theory has some teeth is that Gangnam prostitutes are unconciously trendsetters; younger women who go to Gangnam are fashion followers who think they are dressing after trendsetters, but the trendsetters are hookers. So...let's bring this back to the OPs post.

OP is complaining about ripped pants. Here's the interesting thing--ripped pants are like...not a thing right now. Go on tumblr or reddit...no women are rocking ripped jeans except Korean women. Now, what subset of Korean women were wearing ripped jeans 3 years ago? Hookers, dude. Hookers. Those goofy platform shoes Korean girls are rocking now? 2 years ago? Gangnam hookers.

Doubt it all you want, Gangnam hookers are a major source of fashion trends in Korea.

All in all it's lovely to look at even after 6 years, but it's also false advertising. Unlike Bangkok (where I worked for 13 years) where a hooker looks like a hooker but nobody else does, I frequently still find myself thoroughly confused when my question "how much?" is answered by "an apartment, a car, two kids and as many LV bags as I can carry."

Dude, short skirts, high heels/platform shoes, and nice makeup are not some sort of revolutionary trend exclusive to prostitutes. Haven't you ever gone clubbing, since like, the late 90s or even before?

"Gee golly that girl is wearing a short skirt, she must be a dang-old pros-ti-tute."

They aren't prostitutes, they're just people going out clubbing and dressing nice.

I'm from the midwest too and unless you're in an absolute podunk town where there are no clubs and you can't find sushi.

Your friend is an idiot.

There's also TV/movies/music videos/fashion mags and catalogs/the internet, all of which plenty of girls are exposed to well before they make their first trip from Busan to Seoul.

Dude, women spend plenty of time online or going through magazines or taking note of fashion trends when watching movies/TV/MVs. Just because YOU or YOUR FRIEND don't doesn't mean they don't.

So every woman in the club in Gangnam is a hooker? Your description of a hooker's wear just described everyone who has ever gone out clubbing since like 1998 or even earlier.

"Oh my good Ji Min. I just got back from Gangnam. You know what no one in Busan wears and everyone in Gangnam is wearing? Short skirts and platform shoes and fancy makeup. I've never seen those things before in my life. After going to Gangnam and seeing all the girls there dressed like that, I'm going to dress like that now too. Never seen that in a movie or Kpop vid or on the internet or GMarket or fashion blogs or on my friends Cyworld/NateOn, or on TV OR IN A FREAKING DEPT. STORE IN NAMPO DONG OR CENTUM CITY. Can you believe it? Yeah, I've never seen or heard of a platform shoe either. Those big city Gangnam girls are so fashionable." Rolling Eyes

Do you realize how idiotic your friend's idea is?

"If all it takes are high heels and a tight dress to look like a escort, then, I guess young women around the world are all taking fashion cues from escorts."

Sorry dude, but tumblr and reddit are the last places to look for current fashion trends. These days most power fashion bloggers have moved to instagram. Searching the hashtag #rippedjeans brings up over 350,000 pics. But if you really want to search tumblr,

http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/ripped-jeans

http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/rippedjeans

Lots of women that don't look Korean.

I don't know why you think nobody but Koreans are wearing ripped jeans. The 90's are back in style. The grunge look, the band t-shirts, flannels tied around the waist, oversized t-shirts, all black and white (though this is less 90's and more current styles - I blame virgil abloh and his brand Pyrex vision/Off-white)

Besides, your friend's theory is based on the idea that he thinks certain women in gangnam are hookers. Are there hookers in gangnam? Yes. Is it possible a 20yr old Korean girl saw another Korean girl dressed fashionably and copied her look and she turned out to be a ho? Yes.

Do I think hookers in gangnam are setting new fashion trends in Korea? No, I'm betting it's probably one of the dozens of corny fashion tv shows I see flipping through the channels, the internet, power bloggers, etc.
