Quite possibly the worst male attempt to theorize on women's fashion I have seen in a while. Totally ignores things like TV/The movies/Music videos/The Internet/Fashion Magazines/Fashion Blogs/Fashion Sites/Fashion youtube videos. Besides just knowing what looks good.
You do realize that those podunk people in Busan have these things called 'TV' and 'The Internet', right?

Yes, actually. I'm from the midwestern US and Fashion is ABSOLUTELY slow there compared to New York or LA. This is WITH internet, TV, fashion mags, etc.
My friend's theory is obviously just off-the-cuff stuff, but I do think there's something to it. Korean fashion trends don't really follow international trends--a lot of the stuff that hot with HIPSTERS is already 6 months to a year old in other first rate cities. But, we're not talking about hipsters here. We're talking about 19 year old girls who want to look "cute" or "sexy" and their role models are going to be other Korean women. My friend's theory is that a high percentage of the role models in Gangnam are just gonna be prostitutes. Sorry to break it to you but there's a lot of friggin' escorts in Gangnam and if you're naive you're not going to necessarily know that. |
19-20yr old women probably get their fashion cues from the internet these days. If all it takes are high heels and a tight dress to look like a escort, then, I guess young women around the world are all taking fashion cues from escorts. |

Look dude, it's a "you'll know it when you see it" thing. Furthermore, I'd wager that the actual number of people who take practical fashion cues from the internet (as in, they'll read Vogue online and then replicate that outfit) is quite low. In terms of everyday fashion most people still take their fashion cues from other people.
If you have 100 people, probably 5 of them (trendsetters) are really into haut couture or avant gard fashion. After that, you've got 20 (fashion followers) people who take their cues from those 5 and dress very similar to them. Then there's 50 people (average joes) who like the way that the other 25 dress but it's too OUT THERE for them. So, they won't get into that particular fashion trend until Uniqlo/Gap makes something similiar but slightly less edgy. The rest don't care (parents).
So the reason my friend's theory has some teeth is that Gangnam prostitutes are unconciously trendsetters; younger women who go to Gangnam are fashion followers who think they are dressing after trendsetters, but the trendsetters are hookers. So...let's bring this back to the OPs post.
OP is complaining about ripped pants. Here's the interesting thing--ripped pants are like...not a thing right now. Go on tumblr or reddit...no women are rocking ripped jeans except Korean women. Now, what subset of Korean women were wearing ripped jeans 3 years ago? Hookers, dude. Hookers. Those goofy platform shoes Korean girls are rocking now? 2 years ago? Gangnam hookers.
Doubt it all you want, Gangnam hookers are a major source of fashion trends in Korea. |

I don't know why you think nobody but Koreans are wearing ripped jeans. The 90's are back in style. The grunge look, the band t-shirts, flannels tied around the waist, oversized t-shirts, all black and white (though this is less 90's and more current styles - I blame virgil abloh and his brand Pyrex vision/Off-white)

Do I think hookers in gangnam are setting new fashion trends in Korea? No, I'm betting it's probably one of the dozens of corny fashion tv shows I see flipping through the channels, the internet, power bloggers, etc. |

You do realize there are women in Gangnam who are NOT hookers, right? What do you think they wear? Hoop skirts?
Your theory is that all those other girls in Gangnam, instead of looking at a fashion blog/designer site/catalog/Kpop vic/movie/TV show/magazine/etc. looked out at a hooker on the street and said "That's what I'm going to wear!"
It couldn't possibly be the people in Gangnam who have loads of disposable income/good jobs/rich boyfriends who went out and browsed stores or sites or whatnot.
Apparently all the people here who study fashion and design and own clothing stores and all the dept. stores and stuff were stuck in the 80s with LA Gear and Jordache jeans and suddenly they and everyone else looked out and saw a hooker and that caused a massive shift in demand to platform shoes and short skirts?

Once I was sitting at an outdoor cafe with a former girlfriend when a woman walked by wearing shorts and the type of sandals that have straps wrapping around the leg up to the knee. My girlfriend commented to me that she thought that style looked "sexy", and she wanted to buy some for herself. I told her that I thought it looked "slutty". To which she responded, "slutty is sexy!". Touche!
She had a point, but whether I agreed or not is beside the point. It gave me some insight into a woman's thinking. |

Like Chris Rock says about women at the club, you can put the nastiest dirtiest song, and she won't care. If the beats alright she will dance all night. If you mention the lyrics- "He ain't talkin bout me!"
Was it Chris or Pablo Francisco or some other comic who was talking about DJs at the club saying "All right ladies, let's see who is the biggest skank out there tonight" and you'll see girls running up like "Me, me, I'm a skank".
I dunno, is it any worse than men dressing like some mobster/action villain/soldier/gangsta/general punk as though being someone who is a killer/criminal/delinquent is a good thing?

Well when some country bumpkin comes along and says A) Girls take their fashion cues from prostitutes in Gangnam and B) Busan is podunk (light years away from some Midwest nowhere where everyone stands around the Dairy Queen) the yeah, it deserves some flames.
Like I said, it was possibly the most retarded post by men concerning women since the 'Dunkin Donuts is a Status Symbol' thread.
Sad thing is, its these kinds of claims and rumors that get tossed about and get picked up by some dimwitted and gullible journalist and tossed on CNN as some sort of 'Wacky Asian Trend' story you see pop up from time to time. |

Ive never seen anyone in yoga pants here. I like them, for one. If you mean like sweatpants, than yeah, i get that. For American guys, the default "uniform" of sweats, unfitted jeans, some thick cotton t-shirt and, a hoodie, which is cool if you like it.

Yeah Korea has improved my fashion -- all tailored suits, shirts, etc now. Clothes that actually fit!
It's so embarrassing these guys who fly in for meetings with Chaebol heads in suits from back when they weighted 60lb more. Looks more like a Jedi robe than a suit. Korean business dudes know how to dress, and the tailors here make it easy to look great. |

The business dudes here don't "know" how to dress; the tailors and brand name suit makers have copied various European standards, which are now the norm, and almost nobody here deviates from the norm. Just a few years ago it was nasty boxy cut silver suits here, which is what they'd all still be wearing if the trend hadn't turned.
Some Americans, on the other hand, need to clue-in and stop dressing in the oversize clothes and ill-fitting Jedi robe "suits". It lowers status instantly; not good if doing international business or teaching abroad. Lose some weight and wear clothes that fit. Everyone, including yourself, will be happier. |

Business has always been about outward appearances. It just depends on who you are doing business with as to the attire you should choose. Status is style over substance. This is for all of us who lack brilliant ideas about how to get rich (I include myself in that category). Many of the richest folks to ever exist didn't give a *beep* about how they dressed or what kind of car they drove while they were working out their master plan. |
