Korean women need to learn to wear a thong with their white pants and shorts, exercise pants etc. Or at least something that doesnt turn their butt into a weird triangle of fat lumps.

Once I was sitting at an outdoor cafe with a former girlfriend when a woman walked by wearing shorts and the type of sandals that have straps wrapping around the leg up to the knee. My girlfriend commented to me that she thought that style looked "sexy", and she wanted to buy some for herself. I told her that I thought it looked "slutty". To which she responded, "slutty is sexy!". Touche!

She had a point, but whether I agreed or not is beside the point. It gave me some insight into a woman's thinking.[/quo

In response to the OP: I have a friend with a "theory" that young (20-27ish) Korean women take their dress cues from Gangnam prostitutes and don't even realize it. Hear me out--

If you are a post high school Korean woman, age 19 or so, what location in Korea is going to be the epitome of haute coutore and everything trendy? Gangnam. So, you come up from Busan, you go clubbin' and what do you see? Wow, ultra short skirts, platform shoes, make up to the 9's. So, you go back down to Busan with a new fashion sense and impress all your podunk friends. One problem--the other ladies you saw that night aren't regular people who just happen to dress edgy and sexy. No, they were literally prostitutes.

So, Gangnam creates this positive feedback loop. I've noticed, honestly, that Korean women dress more scantilly every year. In a way...I ain't complainin'. At the same time, it does make me a little sad knowing that what they're actually emulating is, many times, just the way that Gangnam prostitutes dress. It's hooker-chic!

Quite possibly the worst male attempt to theorize on women's fashion I have seen in a while. Totally ignores things like TV/The movies/Music videos/The Internet/Fashion Magazines/Fashion Blogs/Fashion Sites/Fashion youtube videos. Besides just knowing what looks good.

You do realize that those podunk people in Busan have these things called 'TV' and 'The Internet', right?

If there is anyone who sounds podunk, its you with this fashion theory. What, back home did everyone sit around in overalls and Wrangler jeans until someone came home from NEW YORK CITY with their fancy schmancy fashions and styles?

First of all; it's not my theory--I said it in the post.

Second; "What, back home did everyone sit around in overalls and Wrangler jeans until someone came home from NEW YORK CITY with their fancy schmancy fashions and styles?"

Yes, actually. I'm from the midwestern US and Fashion is ABSOLUTELY slow there compared to New York or LA. This is WITH internet, TV, fashion mags, etc.

My friend's theory is obviously just off-the-cuff stuff, but I do think there's something to it. Korean fashion trends don't really follow international trends--a lot of the stuff that hot with HIPSTERS is already 6 months to a year old in other first rate cities. But, we're not talking about hipsters here. We're talking about 19 year old girls who want to look "cute" or "sexy" and their role models are going to be other Korean women. My friend's theory is that a high percentage of the role models in Gangnam are just gonna be prostitutes. Sorry to break it to you but there's a lot of friggin' escorts in Gangnam and if you're naive you're not going to necessarily know that.

19-20yr old women probably get their fashion cues from the internet these days. If all it takes are high heels and a tight dress to look like a escort, then, I guess young women around the world are all taking fashion cues from escorts.

"If all it takes are high heels and a tight dress to look like a escort, then, I guess young women around the world are all taking fashion cues from escorts."

Look dude, it's a "you'll know it when you see it" thing. Furthermore, I'd wager that the actual number of people who take practical fashion cues from the internet (as in, they'll read Vogue online and then replicate that outfit) is quite low. In terms of everyday fashion most people still take their fashion cues from other people.

If you have 100 people, probably 5 of them (trendsetters) are really into haut couture or avant gard fashion. After that, you've got 20 (fashion followers) people who take their cues from those 5 and dress very similar to them. Then there's 50 people (average joes) who like the way that the other 25 dress but it's too OUT THERE for them. So, they won't get into that particular fashion trend until Uniqlo/Gap makes something similiar but slightly less edgy. The rest don't care (parents).

So the reason my friend's theory has some teeth is that Gangnam prostitutes are unconciously trendsetters; younger women who go to Gangnam are fashion followers who think they are dressing after trendsetters, but the trendsetters are hookers. So...let's bring this back to the OPs post.

OP is complaining about ripped pants. Here's the interesting thing--ripped pants are like...not a thing right now. Go on tumblr or reddit...no women are rocking ripped jeans except Korean women. Now, what subset of Korean women were wearing ripped jeans 3 years ago? Hookers, dude. Hookers. Those goofy platform shoes Korean girls are rocking now? 2 years ago? Gangnam hookers.

Doubt it all you want, Gangnam hookers are a major source of fashion trends in Korea.

Sorry dude, but tumblr and reddit are the last places to look for current fashion trends. These days most power fashion bloggers have moved to instagram. Searching the hashtag #rippedjeans brings up over 350,000 pics. But if you really want to search tumblr,

http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/ripped-jeans

http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/rippedjeans

Lots of women that don't look Korean.

I don't know why you think nobody but Koreans are wearing ripped jeans. The 90's are back in style. The grunge look, the band t-shirts, flannels tied around the waist, oversized t-shirts, all black and white (though this is less 90's and more current styles - I blame virgil abloh and his brand Pyrex vision/Off-white)

Besides, your friend's theory is based on the idea that he thinks certain women in gangnam are hookers. Are there hookers in gangnam? Yes. Is it possible a 20yr old Korean girl saw another Korean girl dressed fashionably and copied her look and she turned out to be a ho? Yes.

Do I think hookers in gangnam are setting new fashion trends in Korea? No, I'm betting it's probably one of the dozens of corny fashion tv shows I see flipping through the channels, the internet, power bloggers, etc.

"Sorry dude, but tumblr and reddit are the last places to look for current fashion trends."

Alright, I'm outta here.

In other words your friend's theory is completely asinine but you can't bring yourself to admit it.

You do realize there are women in Gangnam who are NOT hookers, right? What do you think they wear? Hoop skirts?

Your theory is that all those other girls in Gangnam, instead of looking at a fashion blog/designer site/catalog/Kpop vic/movie/TV show/magazine/etc. looked out at a hooker on the street and said "That's what I'm going to wear!"

It couldn't possibly be the people in Gangnam who have loads of disposable income/good jobs/rich boyfriends who went out and browsed stores or sites or whatnot.

Apparently all the people here who study fashion and design and own clothing stores and all the dept. stores and stuff were stuck in the 80s with LA Gear and Jordache jeans and suddenly they and everyone else looked out and saw a hooker and that caused a massive shift in demand to platform shoes and short skirts?

If you ever wanted to sound like the small town midwesterner that you say you are, boy did you just mark yourself.

No, I left the thread because someone saying Tumblr and Reddit aren't the places to go for fashion let me know that this thread is completely pointless. FFS, 50% of tumblr is street fashion and the other 50% is porn.

You are all acting as though it's just completely impossible that fashion inspiration can come from "less desirable" segments of society. Are you going to tell me that baggy pants didn't come from American Prison Culture? Are you going to tell me that the "metrosexual" movement of the early 00's didn't come from gay culture? Mind you, I'm not putting value judgement on this at all. Taking fashion cues from prostitutes, especially if you are *striving* to be "sexy"/"slutty" isn't insane.

"Your theory is that all those other girls in Gangnam..."

No, not ALL the girls in Gangnam. Look back to my earlier post--you don't need everyone in a subgroup to do something to cause a change. You just need the trendsetters and their followers to, well, start a trend. And in SOME cases of Korean women's fashion, it's entirely *plausible* that Gangnam prostitutes were trendsetters inadvertently. I don't think urban males saw baggy clothes and went "I wanna look like a prisoner", and I don't think the metrosexual movement was started by guys going "I really just wanna look gay". Same case here.

But please, continue...the white knighting on this thread is hilarious.

P.s.
Chicago is a podunk midwestern town?

But you have zero evidence to actually support this theory. Your theory is that girls in Busan, as though Busan is some sort of nowhere, went to Seoul and the girls they saw were all prostitutes dressed in short skirts and high heels, and that they returned to Busan and began dressing that way.

In order for your theory, the following must be true-

1)That those girls in Busan and zero knowledge or awareness in fashion beyond what their friends wore. In other words, no influence from TV/Movies/Music Videos/Fashion Magazines/The Internet/Other Stores in Busan.

2)That they only went to Gangnam when they went to Seoul or that they went to Gangnam at all

3)That hookers in Gangnam (as opposed to anywhere else) all wore short skirts and platform shoes, and the girls were unaware that they were hookers, and that non-hookers in Gangnam did not wear short skirts.

4)That Busan has no hookers or that their hookers do not wear short skirts and platform shoes, or that these girls did not see any hookers in Busan.

5) That the hookers of Gangnam invented short skirts and platform shoes and did not copy that look from someone else.

Quote:

It's not plausible at all. All of the following contingencies I listed above would have to be true. This would be a Rube Goldbergian fashion trend. It's far more likely that short skirts have been popular at clubs and places where people go clubbing for a long time and that girls have picked that up through all the various outlets that exist.

How long have short skirts existed dude? Since like the 60s. People who went around in short skirts are GRANDMOTHERS now. Do you think Korea was utterly unaware of the short skirt or short shorts until 2005 or whenever you claim this trend started and the Gangnam hookers all organized and started wearing them?

Which brings me to another point- When did this all start? What is your timeline for this? When did Gangnam become the place to be for clubbin? When did word reach the rest of Korea that this was the case? I want to know the exact year that your podunk Busaners would start going to Gangnam all googly-eyed and seeing the unknown till now miniskirt and platform shoes.

Because if you can't site a year for all of this, then your theory is full of crap.

Yea, those oversized shirts and jeans just look ridiculous now. I used to dress that way and looking back at old photos, I'm like wtf was I thinking!

Yeah Korea has improved my fashion -- all tailored suits, shirts, etc now. Clothes that actually fit!

It's so embarrassing these guys who fly in for meetings with Chaebol heads in suits from back when they weighted 60lb more. Looks more like a Jedi robe than a suit. Korean business dudes know how to dress, and the tailors here make it easy to look great.

The business dudes here don't "know" how to dress; the tailors and brand name suit makers have copied various European standards, which are now the norm, and almost nobody here deviates from the norm. Just a few years ago it was nasty boxy cut silver suits here, which is what they'd all still be wearing if the trend hadn't turned.

Some Americans, on the other hand, need to clue-in and stop dressing in the oversize clothes and ill-fitting Jedi robe "suits". It lowers status instantly; not good if doing international business or teaching abroad. Lose some weight and wear clothes that fit. Everyone, including yourself, will be happier.

Business has always been about outward appearances. It just depends on who you are doing business with as to the attire you should choose. Status is style over substance. This is for all of us who lack brilliant ideas about how to get rich (I include myself in that category). Many of the richest folks to ever exist didn't give a *beep* about how they dressed or what kind of car they drove while they were working out their master plan.

And good on them for that.
Whenever I hear people bag on Americans' general lack of style, part of me wants to respond that it's more the maverick side of Americans that we just don't really care much about fashion and have other priorities and other ways to judge people.

Whereas in Korea, the outside appearance (and fashion) overrides almost everything and is closely linked to status, hence the close attention to the fashion trends here as nobody wants lowered status if they are rocking last year's shoes or whatever.

Fashion isn't the end all/be all, and I'm no style guru myself, but still, many Americans in general still could use a style upgrade or at least wear clothes that fit instead of the oversized drapery look that some still rock.

One issue could be that their arses tend not to eat panties the same way a more voluptuous arse might, and so thongs aren't quite as necessary.

But yes, no argument for more thongs! Very Happy

I hate when people say dumb crap like this. It basically means, you aren't sheepish and gullible enough to follow random trends people dictate. Rain boots which were only worn by kitchen workers, kids and people at the fish market? Cool, let's make that "trendy." Ajumma "refrigerator" pants? Cool we'll make that a trendy.
