On Saturday, Brittany Maynard, a young woman diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and an advocate of the "Death With Dignity" movement ended her life through an assisted suicide.

Brittany Maynard, the 29-year-old newlywed diagnosed with terminal brain cancer who had in recent months become the new face of the "Death With Dignity" movement passed away on Saturday as the result of an assisted suicide.

Maynard publicly announced her intention to move to Oregon to take advantage of the state's physician-assisted suicide law. Oregon is only one of three states with such a law.

Her outspokenness in her decision to undergo a physician-assisted suicide brought the "Death With Dignity" movement back into the spotlight, after ti had stagnated in public discourse in the past decade or more. The movement is strongly opposed by the Catholic Church, which says assisted suicide violates the commandment "Thou Shalt Not Kill."

The opposition of the Catholic Church has been in large part what has held many states back from passing laws to legalize assisted suicide. In 2012, a "Death With Dignity" law just narrowly failed to pass on a ballot in Massachusetts. Time magazine reported that $5 million was spent to defeat it, $4 million of which came from the Catholic Church.

Maynard brought the debate to the forefront again by explaining what it feels like to be in the position of a terminally ill patient. “For people to argue against this choice for sick people really seems evil to me,” she told People magazine last month. “They try to mix it up with suicide and that’s really unfair, because there’s not a single part of me that wants to die. But I am dying.”

How nice of the Catholic Church to spend money on the fight to prevent people from ending their suffering. I guess they must have still had some money left over from all the pedophilia payouts.
