Shin Eun-Mi To Be Deported From South Korea For Praising North Korea
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/10/shin-eun-mi-deported_n_6448042.html

"SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A Korean-American woman accused of praising rival North Korea in a recent lecture said she is being deported Saturday from South Korea, in the latest in a series of cases that critics say infringe on the country's freedom of speech.

The Korea Immigration Service decided to deport Shin Eun-mi, a California resident, after prosecutors determined that her comments violated South Korea's National Security Law, agency official Kim Du-yeol said.

Shin said she will be taking a flight out of South Korea on Saturday evening, but hopes to be able to return to both Koreas."

I missed this the first time I read the article....

"In December, a high school student threw a homemade explosive device toward a podium where Sin was speaking, injuring two people. Shin was unhurt. The student was sent to a juvenile detention center and is awaiting trial."

http://koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2014/12/113_169746.html

"Police sought an arrest warrant Thursday for a teenager after he reportedly threw a pot containing burning gasoline in a cathedral located in Iksan, North Jeolla Province, where a public forum about issues in North Korea was being held.

The two women targeted were Shin Eun-mi, 51, a Korean-American music professor, and Hwang Seon, 41, a former deputy speaker of the now-defunct Democratic Labor Party."

I don't know if I would go so far as to call her stupid. If she was purposely trying to test the limits of free speech, some would be calling her brave, even if she was making Pro-Nork statements. The thing is, I am not so sure that is what she was trying to do, so yeah, maybe she was a little naive about how touchy some groups get and the consequences of ticking them off.. But hell, her book on her trips were even included in a government-designated reading list in 2013, so wtf.....

Here's a few links to articles on the controversy in the K Times...

I think the law is draconian as it tramples on basic freedom of speech rights. However, it is their country. Shin Eun-mi is not a citizen. She can go back to her comfortable lifestyle in the US and romanticize the North all she wants.

Hey I agree 100% with the "their country" part. Still, even as an outsider it's interesting to see the political debate play out within the country between the Libs and the Cons.

Quote:
Conservatives have sided with government moves to expel Shin, accusing her of ignoring North Korea's abysmal human rights conditions. But her impending deportation drew sharp criticism from liberals who say the conservative government of President Park Geun-hye is clamping down on freedom of speech.

"The decision to deport her is a clear violation of human rights," the Hankyoreh newspaper said in an editorial Friday. "The government is taking the lead in trampling on human rights."

At the United Nations, the deputy spokesman for Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Farhan Haq, told reporters: "The secretary-general's position on freedom of expression and freedom of opinion is well known. ... That would apply here as well." Ban is South Korean.

Also, the side story of the high school kid throwing a pot of flaming gasoline towards her podium when she was speaking just astounds me. A high school kid??? Wow!! It also turns out it happened in Iksan, where I once taught. He could have been one of my students.....

Should've made her speech 12 years ago.

Quote:
A vulgar country, fucking U.S.A.
Are you so happy over a gold medal?
A nasty country, fucking U.S.A.

Such as you are, can you claim that the U.S.A. is a nation of justice?
Why on earth don't we say what we have to?
Are we slaves of a colonial nation?

Now we will shout: "No to the U.S.A."
A wretched thief, fucking U.S.A. that stole our Olympic gold medal
A wicked robber, fucking U.S.A. that tries to rob everything by force

Did you hear Bush's reckless words?
A shameless country, fucking U.S.A.
It makes war threats to the north as well as intervention into the south

A country of gangsters, fucking U.S.A.
Is the U.S.A. still a beautiful country?
Is the north still an "enemy" to be killed?

How much more do you want to endure?
It's time to shout: "Yankee, go home!"

You dirty Yankees, wait and see
We will reunify the country with the independent force of the Korean nation
We will build a dignified country, a reunified country

Don't forget the blood-stained history of Korea!
You, author of Korea's division, fucking U.S.A.
Don't forget the Nogun-ri massacre of civilians!

You, murderer, fucking U.S.A.

That was a protest song written by South Korean singer and activist Yoon Min-suk. It "was the unofficial theme song of the anti-US hatefest of 2002".

Although I did find that interesting, what connection does it have to the current story on Shin Eun-Mi?

Pretty big stretch to compare the two. Yoon Min-suk is not only Pro-Korean and pro-unification, she is also virulently anti-American. Shin Eun-Mi is an American citizen, and not so much pro North - she's just not as anti as some would like. She also thinks the north's beer tastes better, but you can't fault her for saying that! Laughing

Personally I think the US should be deporting political undesirables too. Anybody sympathizing with North Korea is nuts. Being deported is no big deal anyway. Actually they could start with the Islamists in my opinion even if they're citizens.

I kind of agree, but what would you do with in-country natural-born citizens? Where will you deport them to? Parents country? Which parent? How about a 5th generation white American born in Kansas who decides to go Islamic extremist?

I personally would limit it to naturalized citizens who naturalized after the age of 12. For younger kids, I'd try to figure out why they are turning out the way they are.

You've got to consider these scenarios before making a law. Otherwise lawyers will have a field day tearing the law apart.

...and a hundred schools of thought contend.

A yes, the great liberalisation of thought. Let a hundred opposing perspectives be allowed.
